Get your camera ready; Snap it in the Grove wants you
It's open to professional and amateur professional photographers of all ages. Those who participate will be provided with four mystery topics. Photographers will then take to the streets of the Grove to snap four photo representing each of the four mystery topics (a total of 16 photos).
There will be four hours to get the photos, so it's four photos in four hours. The contest runs from 10 am to 2 pm. Registration begins at 9 am. There is a $50.00 registration fee for adults and $25.00 for children. The application may be downloaded here.
After all the photos have been downloaded at the Arts Festival office, judges will select one photograph per topic, leaving each contestant with four photos out of the 16.
The judges will then choose winners in each category.
Best Overall Photograph winner in the adult and child categories will receive a cash prize of $250.00. All winners of the "Best Photograph" award for each topic and the "Best Overall Photograph" will have their photos framed, compliments of Frameworks and they will be displayed in the Arts Festival's gallery at Mayfair.

Grape,
This thing smells like a scam. You ante up your 50 bucks to enter AND must sign over "the unrestricted right and permission to use and reuse, publish, print, and reproduce for display or for sale any photograph in whole or in part, composite or retouched in character or form". Not only to the Coconut Grove Arts & Historical Association, Inc. but to some commercial outfit as well (Pro Photo, Inc.). Further you "relinquish any right that I may have to examine or approve the completed photographs, product or products or printed matter that may be used in conjunction
therewith or the use to which it may be applied." At 50 bucks per entrant, the event quickly recoups the modest prize money ($250) and the participants effectively relinquish any copyright interest they might have in their output.
Maybe the arts fest folks should explain why this is a good deal.
I seriously doubt that Monty Trainer is trying to scam Grove residents.
great idea. Bad execution. Change it to "Creative Commons" and lower the fee to $10 and I'll be interested on joining the photo safari.
Otherwise thanks but no thanks...
While I totally agree that Monty is probably not trying to scam anybody, I would suggest that the arts fest folks have not fully thought through the ramifications of what are likely standard release form terms.
And that is the problem since it is likely to put a damper on any enthusiasm the better photographers are going to have about the project.
This event isn't Grove specific, so I don't think anyone is scamming anyone. It also isn't the first year (at least in other locations). Sure the fee is a little high but it's all about having fun and showing off your inner artist. :-)
Every other day or so when I think or do something stupid or dumb and realize it, something comes along that's even dumber and more stupid.
Lets see, someone wants me to pay them $50.00, to take pictures of something they say are four "mystery topics"? And MiamiShyner says "but it's all about having fun and showing off your inner artist.:-)" Isn't this how Madoff got his $50-billion? How can it be fun losing $50.00?
Right on Include me Out !
If this is truly about "the arts" and "artists" (or any other tidbits of copy from the arts fest concept) than it actually needs to be a service to artists & other interested residents in the grove. That means: free/lo entrance, you don't own my work (but you could), this is just for fun, nominal prizes, donated party at the end of the day for the players... civics people !
