Muvico project is still planned for the Grove
There have been lots of stories about Muvico's financial problems lately, but we are told that the Coconut Grove project is a go and the only thing stopping them are permit issues. The permits can take up to 45 days.
They still don't have a planned construction start. But according to Lilliana Dones, Chamber President, everything you have read about their problems will not affect the Grove project.
The subject of alternate movie venues during the closing of the movie theater during renovation was brought up again at last night's Village Council meeting. I personally have sent a few recommendations over to the Council, by businesses that have contacted me. So now it's just a matter of getting a few more and getting the movies, but high ceilings seem to be the main issue with lots of the venues -- they don't have them.
I think 22 foot ceilings are minimum for movies. The Improv offered their location but they cannot accommodate movies. Javib, at Temple, offered his location and even Avalon, the new club at Mary and Florida, has offered. And quite a few more places have been interested.
Lilliana mentioned a project in the Bronx, NY, where filmmakers actually have their own movies shown. They give a little talk and then present their new work -- documentaries, comedies, dramas, anything they have produced. And apparently the lines are around the block for this type of thing.
Now is the time to plan alternatives until the Muvico opens. When AMC closes, there will be 20,000 to 30,000 less people per month visiting the Grove if there is no movie alternative up and running.

Talk to Steve Krams at International Cinema Equipment Co. They have a screening room in the Grove, so there's no excuse not to.
I suspect that the costs are waaaay higher than you think, but Steve's the guy; if it can be done, he'll tell you how to do it.
