Bed Race planning committee met yesterday
There was a committee meeting to discuss the Coconut Grove Bed Race yesterday. About 12 to 15 people met to discuss details.
The race is planned for May 31, but there is still a lot to get done. The total cost is said to be $25,000 and about $10,000 to $15,000 still needs to be raised, hopefully through donors. Not necessary one donor, but smaller donations by many. A package is in the works that can be sent to potential donors for their contributions.
An insurance company or large company is being looked into as the main donor, so that would solve the problem if one big donor could cover all or most costs. But if anyone is interested, please contact me and I'll pass the info along.
The city charges $10,000 alone for services such as police, fire and solid waste. The objective is to have Commodore Plaza (the site of the race) closed down as short a time as possible, in order to keep the costs down. They are still not sure on the times that are needed to set up and take down.
A director or couple of directors will be hired to handle all logistics and run the whole thing.
Beds will have to fit into certain parameters, i.e. double or queen size bed frames or only mattresses, maybe keep the double bed frame but allow kayaks like in the past, etc. All this is still in the talking phases. So hold off on any bed construction at the moment.
But the committee consisting of the BID, the Chamber and local business owners are all gung ho for this event. One estimate is that 6000 spectators will attend. So it's an exciting thing.

Just a few comments about bringing back the bed race to Coconut Grove. This is an old idea being reborn again. Last bed races were done about six years ago during the Fourth of July.
Scantily clad women clinging to makeshift metal rigs made to look like beds. During the race four to six men would run these contraptions as fast as they could down the street.
That year one bed careened into the crowd hitting a young girl knocking out her front teeth - all of her front teeth. Beside dangerous it is juvenile.
Can't we come up with something else that will be safe, fun and sponsorable. I hope this is short lived - the Grove can do better!
are you serious? Are you one of the people who complain about the noise also?
Oh my. Well, if someone once got hurt in a freak accident related to something, we mustn't ever do it again.
And would you kids turn down that darn racket!!!
Looks like the Bed Race Committee are all falling asleep. How dull is this meeting!
I dislike it; but the Grape reporting on this bed race issue in such detail regarding the cost, the planning, the police, trash, insurance etc, sad about the girl being injured----and David Collins of the BID paying for the musicians, several million for tourist stations, light post costing $8,000.00 each. Noise ordanances----last night the Grove was full of people having such a great time and @ about 10:00 P.M. the police positioned themselves ready to tone and rachet the noise down to accomodiate the condo dwellers by 11:00 P.M.----and all of a sudden half the people disappeared from the streets. I had no idea as to the complexity; I don't like it, but I think it's here to stay.
