At least the taxpayers aren't paying for it

I agree, if you don't want to go. Don't go. Nobody is forcing you and if Muvico sees fit to spend all that money and renovate, why be such a downer. At least they aren't asking for a bailout and using "stimulous" money for this.
I believe people complaining are just noting the obvious. Short term sounds great... I love it, can't wait to see it. I am sure its going to be amazing....and I will be first to spend mucho dinero to check it out...
Now once the newness dies out is my concern but hell, I am not going to rain on the parade. Build it large and build it high...
Regarding the Marlins Stadium...against it, but at least the Marlins will have tax dollars to support their numerous years of being in the red.
The future of Coconut Grove for our kids and their kids is in the hands of mega companys like Muvico & Lucky 7 Supper Club. The mom and pop type stores will still be able to survive. But anchors like this is the most important for all to exist. Nothing is bad about Movie, Bowling and Dinner. All clean family fun for all ages to really enjoy together here in the most wonderful Village in South Florida. Bring it on and Thank You!
Coconut Grove needs more large ahcnor shops to support the mom and pop businesses. We especially need more bars and to be able to drink till 5am :). Let's push for CHANGE!
Speak for yourself. I'm going to be standing outside forcing every within fifty feet to go in and grudgingly eat some prime rib, have some (grudging) fun bowling, and (again, grudgingly) watch a movie.
You say they bitch and then you bitch about their bitching and now I'm bitching about you bitching about their bitching and now someone will bitch about my bitching about your bitching about their bitching. Go, don't go, it's all free choice, but we must all look for some common ground so the Grove can provide us a decent living wage to support our families. Muvico has proven to be a magnet for people, so whatelse can we do to have these people spread out about the Grove and perhaps spend a few more dollars for the mom and pop operations?
Im on the fence.
I agree with some of you who say that this is a mess. I rarely go to the movie theater anymore since its a $30 affair. I think this should be a middle ground, the bowling alley in Doral is not doing so well and you have a lot of people there. On the other hand I know MANY people that hated coming to the grove for the theater. Half the time the movies were late and the other half the ac was on full blast or off.
That being said I agree with Grape on the matter of people complaining. But at the same time I see the viewpoint of everyone else. Some things sound great on paper however are nearly impossible. (like free parking in the grove)
Could they compromise and show some art/foreign films as well as the big hits that are also playing right down the road at Sunset place? That might appeal to both the upscale crowds who enjoy the art in the Grove, and the families/students looking for more mainstream fare.
By the way, I'm a new Grove resident and really enjoy learning about my new community via the Grapevine!
10:09 - welcome. Now all you have to do is realize that I'm right about everything and agree with my every opinion an whim.
One big benefit of Muvico, is they will carry different movies than AMC, so there will be something differentiating us from the other areas - nice new theatre, slightly different selection of films and bowling right there. It's all good. Also, this company likes to do events to kick off a new opening and sneak previews, look for that to draw some nice crowds in.
Len Scinto:
My wife and I went to the Cine-bistro at the Dolphin Mall. We were both working late on a Saturday at FIU and wanted to have a night out without a hassle. We had a real nice time. The movie was "traitor" with Don Cheadle. the seating and tables were great. The picture and sound very good as were the food and drinks...we each had a couple of good Martinis. Best of all the audience was made up of respectful adults enjoying each others company. the palce was not a "teen-hangout". which is fine...but not for me. We spent about $130 for the night including dinner, drinks, and the movie. Not cheap but very worth it for a nice night out. they have been there a couple of years so maybe this model works.
Anon 12:24, Yes, I reviewed critics and what press had to say.
These theaters have a draw of humans seeking a new experience and the concept of luxury in this new concept & venue---apparently and to date, since they are so new into the market, continues. Their ticket sales are about 1% ahead of all other theater chains in this time of depression. The question now is how to continue to entertain these drawn in customers to spend a few dollars out and about the Grove. I say with art and performance artist who do not have to pass any test, obtain permits and pass inspection past making sure they are not child molesters or selling drugs, get my point----open up Grove and lets entertain some tourist and locals.
