Temporary movie theater locations still being sought

Merchants have been concerned about the AMC movie theater's closing for a long period of time for renovations. They have been looking for locations for first run movies to take the place in the interim.

Havib at Temple (the old Flavour) has donated his second floor for just that -- first run movies. I highly doubt the movie distributors want a second rate theater to show their first rate films. Not that Havib has a second rate club, but it's just not a professional movie theater.

We'll have to see how it goes. More locations are being sought.

I gotta say, this is one of the stupidest ideas I've ever seen bandied about for so long.

Why? Because the costs of creating a temporary movie theatre that a distributor of first-run films would consider are 90% of the cost of building a permanent one:
- comfortable ADA-compliant seating on risers
- insurance to cover the liability on the risered seating.
- sound proof projection booth with 200 amps of power and its own HVAC system
- projectors for the duration
- adequate sound system for the duration.

This is a completely different set of parameters than showing an occasional film that's no longer in active distribution. The only way this could possibly work is if you find an existing movie theater.

I would like to see the numbers on how many people actually go to Cocowalk to see a movie each week. Something tells me they are quite low. Closing it down probably wont have much of an impact.

In Newport, RI a playhouse has been converted to a small movie theatre. It's great and very "grove like". Would our playhouse on Main Highway be up for a temp movie experience? Just an idea.

Open the Grove to performance artist on a trial basis, no holds barred as ticket sales were low at the theater for whatever reason(s). Muvico states in informationals the new theater will not be ready until Spring 2010. Performance artist are readily available everywhere and a makeshift movie house is next to impossible what with insurance, code enforcement, rules, regulations, permit, approvals, etc. Folks, lets go back to the Grove heyday to attract people to the Grove and for those who think a theater is the answer, the artist will take up the slack and when the theater is finished, who knows, the Grove just might be even better than 25 years ago.

"Performance Artist" = Wanna-be stand-up comic whose jokes aren't funny.

Swlip, respectfully, performance artist are not designated stand-up artist, jokes, funny, rather they are individuals, much like yourself who sign off as swlip, but also make no eye to eye contact, but want approval, like myself plying a trade as an outside artist who only want to communicate with other people who use art as their tool to have social entercourse. Art? What it is? You are an artist who signs off as Swilp who we enjoy hearing from and communicating with, as in we are a community thanks to the Grape. Love Ya.
