Let's put dogs and cats and peacocks on the streets
Remember the painted cows and taxi cabs in New York and the painted Flamingos here and painted roosters in Little Havana? Well upstate New York has two events. The town of Hudson has painted dogs and the town of Catskill has cats (Catskill, cats, perfect fit).
I talked about the Chalk Festival yesterday and now AnnaMaria tells me about the dogs and cats that the Hudson Valley participated in last summer.
This, too, could be a great Grove project, we could also maybe do peacocks.
This could tie into the art in public places project that has been discussed only it could be a less expensive and on a smaller scale. The works could be sold off eventually to raise money for the Village or charities.
Picture these creatures around the Grove. Picture Commdore Plaza and Grand Avenue, that corner is blah, picture a colorful dog or cat on each corner.
The main problem would be maintenance and vandalism, but it has worked before with the other pieces (cows, flamingos, etc.) so why not these?
AnnaMaria seems to have some great ideas concerning art in the Grove. We ought to make her the Grove Zsar of Culture and Art, sort of like President Obama is doing on a national level with Quincy Jones.

I like the chalk art idea better, this dog and cat thing reminds me of the freaky roosters they put on 8th Street, it looks like a Santeria tradition.
I agree the sidewalk art is amazing!
yeah I agree it looks tacky
Dogs and cats no, peacocks yes! It adds to the eclectic nature of the grove...some painted zany, others lifelike...if done right it could almost be a tourist attraction - "find the 10 different peacocks in the grove" - and a photo destination.
Should I add the obligatory "anything is better than those black booths" comment?
Maybe we could hold a contest to paint the 'black booths', one could have a peacock motif, etc. What do you think?
Chalk the sidewalks, artist on the streets, numerous eateries, nightclubs, music until the early a.m.'s, transvestites, gays, straights, tourist, gravesites----------it's all disconnected. Who's in charge?
