The day the geeks came to town

Yesterday, Virginia Street was taken over by BarCamp Miami. Anokha was the home base for the techie seminars and there were two banquet rooms across the street at the Mayfair Hotel, which were also used for the event. All of this was free for anyone to attend. I wandered around with a few friends on and off all day and everyone was very impressed.

Attendees listened to impromptu seminars on anything tech-based from "How to make money blogging (good one for me); to how to upload photos to certain websites. There was so much social networking being talked and Tweeted (on Twitter), it was hard to keep up.

The crowd was great, we enjoyed interacting with all of them. Alex de Carvalho and Brian Breslin and crew did an incredible job. Michael and Christie at the sign in table did a great job of making people feel welcome the minute they arrived.

One thing I found very funny -- if a person wanted to speak on a subject, all they had to do was write it down on a post-it note and post it on a large board at an open time slot. The funny part is that this whole crowd was there to teach and learn about most state of the art techie stuff and they used an old fashioned method to set up the seminars -- paper, ink and a large board. I'm surprised this wasn't electronically done.

But it was an enjoyable day for everyone and at the end of the day, everyone headed to the rooftop of the Mayfair Hotel for the Cabana One club, some went to Sammy C's for dinner and others to Angelo and Maxie's.

Nice photo slide. It was a great event. For some reason I wasn't expecting many presentations but I was pleasantly surprised.

If we only had more events like this in the Grove. The idle Coconut Grove Playhouse could be used for this type of functions instead of having it split between the restaurant and the hotel.

It was a great event. I'm rocking the t-shirt now, going to FOWA with my student pass tomorrow. :)

It was a fun event and it was great to have it close to home in the Grove.

Mr. Moe's was great for lunch and I thoroughly enjoyed the event.

I'm also rocking the shirt and wrist band.

The post-board itinerary I think is a great testament to the K.I.S.S model and the fact that anyone with an interesting topic can simply put his name in the hat so to say and get 30 minutes of people's ears is great.
