Why do things need to be explained?

I know that some people were complaining that they couldn't hear the emcees at the King Mango Strut this year. Many said that the noise and music coming from CocoWalk was overpowering the parade.

In the past, the Strut spent $3000 for speakers on a P.A. system, this year, they spent $79.00 on megaphones.

But why do people need to explain the parade as it goes by? Most along the route are not even in the areas where the announcers are. Each parade unit should sort of be self contained and self explanatory. Figuring out what the unit is about is the fun part.

Now George Bush with the shoes would be understood anywhere in any language. It was such a perfect caricature of the whole shoe throwing incident.

The Code Enforcement group was handing out citations and even if you didn't receive a citation, their banner explained what they were doing. And did Antoinette need to be explained as Sarah Palin? No.

Even with a banner and announcer, I never did get the Hannah Montana girl shown here.

Why do sporting games have color commentary - why don't they just let people figure out what the play is, who it is and what the score is. Could it be because it adds to the event? Could it be because it sparks the crowd? Could it be you get the crowd yelling or chanting? I think so!

I didn't know this was an issue. I would have gladly loaned them a P.A. system. I will make sure to let them know for next year. - Temple Ultralounge

Doesn't the Strut have a board that votes on these types of things - whether or not to have a sound system, whether or not to have after parties, whether or not to pay bands, seems like that would be the answer. Or is it a one man show where one person makes all the decisions? I see a lot of people putting this event togoether - don't they have a say in major decisions? The Strut must be a 501c3 - let that be known and more people would donate to it knowing it would be deductible. These seem to be easy solutions.

Oh, please! This problem of not understanding the Strutters is an eternal one for a zillion different reasons. Some of it is that many either make signs nobody can read from far away or that sound doesn't travel in 4 directions all at once.

I get disappointed when some who know they're going out there to "strut" don't pit a little more thought into their message. Go out there, and really let the crowd understand you quickly & clearly & you've already one half the battle. The other half is letting your zany creativity shine!
