Great Taste winners announced

winners
The Great Taste of the Grove announced the "Best of the Taste" awards yesterday.

For Saturday's "Taste," Cita's Italian Chophouse (above left) came in first for a sensational Scallop wrapped in Bacon and a fabulous Lasagna Tradicionale. Ironcially, that is the first thing we ordered on Saturday, after getting a Presidente beer, we went to Cita's booth and ordered those two items. So lesson be learned -- next year if you see us enter the booth, call us over to purchase your food first!

The "Great Style" award went to Bizcaya at Ritz Carlton (above right) for an outstanding culinary presentation.

For Sunday's "Taste," Panorama at the Sonesta, won first prize for their "triple crown menu" of Chupe de Camarones, Tuna Nikkei and Butifarra. The "Great Style" award sent to Monty's Raw Bar for their outstanding booth design. It was a boat hull with a whole prep kitchen built inside. It looked great and was totally self-contained and functional.

Official judges for this year's event were Linda Gassenheimer, culinary media personality; Katherine Phillips, Coconut Grove Arts Festival; and Chef Paul LeBlanc.

I tasted plenty and I thought Bizcaya was the best. The duck salad was incredibly good. I also thought a close second was Panorama with their pork sandwich. Ive had mixed experiences there and it was nice to see them pump out a good dish for the masses. Not for nothing, but the egg roll at Atachana was really good and a killer value for $2. They had an awesome hot sauce that I made good use of. I have to admit I did cheat a bit and brought my own 12 pack of suds to enjoy. But, I did buy 2 beers on Saturday and then 2 on Sunday to use the cups so I dont really feel bad about it.

All in all, it was a great event once again and I dont think the weather couldve been any more perfect. These are the times when I feel its best to be in the Grove. Next up - Art Fest!
