I had a long pow wow with the local police
As I walked from the car (after paying for parking), I noticed a bunch of police cars coming around the corner, I also noticed that a bunch of taxi cabs were parked in desired spots without paying for parking. One was sitting, one was eating his lunch, another was sleeping.
The only reason I even bring up the issue is because I must receive five emails a week asking me to write about the taxis taking up all the parking spots and not paying for parking.
I flagged down the cops and we got into a long discussion about the recent parking issues. The meeting went on for over an hour, right on Virginia Street. There were about three police cars, maybe four, the lights were flashing, the cops were surrounding me and it looked like I was being arrested. Everyone that walked by stared.
But we were having a good natured talk about the parking issues. Also, the cabs were told to pay up or vacate, so they vacated and now every time I walk by their parking areas, where they do congregate, I am called every name in the book.
But the police told me a lot of intesting things, including that towing will start next week in the "loading zone" areas on Grand Avenue. They all were very familiar with the Grapevine and read everything about themselves, including all comments left by readers. They weren't too thrilled with all the negative publicity.
More tomorrow.

Cops, read this:
Set an example - use your turn signals; don't run red lights; don't drive the wrong way on the one-way section of Matilda; and don't talk on your phone while you are driving.
Treat people with respect - your badge and gun do not make you smarter or more important than the citizens you serve. Your cockiness would be ironically amusing if you weren't so abusive. Do not prejudge people based on their appearance.
AMEN!!!!
I NEVER see a cop use his/her turn signal. They are often using the phone while driving and I am sorry, but if you are on your way to a big emergency, use your lights/siren!
My brother is a veteran and a cop. I have huge respect for their work and invaluable contributions but... to all the cops in Miami - stop abusing your power and obey the law.
Mr anonymous @6:02am...I must say that you might need to change your glasses 'cause I have seen Cops using their turn signals, and let me ask you this: when was the last time you got a ticket for not using your turn signal? which I am pretty sure you don't use. If you had an emergency in you house perhaps a burglary in progress wouldn't you appreciate that the responding Cop ran the red light and drove against traffic to get to your house faster ? or you would rather he observed the speed limit, the red light and the one way street ? I don't know you but I wouldn't.. One more thing, SINCE WHEN IT IS AGAINST THE LAW TO BE ON A CELL IN DADE COUNTY?? I am just saying !!!!
