City of Miami is giving the Grove some autonomy

I ran into Dave Collins the other day, head of the BIC, soon to be BID.

Anway, Dave is excited about some changes that he and Haydee Wheeler from the NET office are working on.

I had brought up something in the past about signage promoting certain businesses or events at locations around the Grove. Until now it was not legal, now it is. So that may happen soon. For instance, a temporary sign may be posted announcing a new restaurant or a new art gallery, etc.

Also, benches may be offered with merchant names on them. I am not sure how this will work, I am assuming it is a small card or sticker or something and not a big bus bench sign. It's a new way to advertise and also raise money at the same time.

The reason this is interesting is because it is not permitted in other areas of Miami and Miami is finally giving the Grove our own autonomy in a small way. With the BID, I think it will happen more and more.

The BID seems to be a great way to push the Grove forward. I hope it is wisely used as a voice for the Grove merchants.

Didn't we already fight against signs on benches and lost? Isn't advertising visual pollution? Is this the bone that the city hands us? Be very careful about what you wish for. I really think that the citizens of Coconut Grove do not want signs everywhere. I like to use this blog to find out what's going on. I do not want signs all over the place.
Its the same theory that I hear on this blog. If you buy a house in the entertainment district, expect noise. If you open a business in a place that doesn't allow signs, you shouldn't be changing the rules after the fact.
