FANTASTIC!!! CONGRATULATIONS, DAVID.
Nice job David ... we all know you lost all that weight recently hustling all over town on our behalf to get this done. You should be very proud!
Dear David, Commissioner Sarnoff and BIC to BID Committee

We look forward to working together with you in bringing about this positive change for the business district of Coconut Grove.

Liliana Dones
President, Coconut Grove Chamber of Commerce
As a new addition to the Grove I can honestly say I don't know the Politics or anyone involved. However, after reading all the post some past and the present. I'm Not sure this is a bad thing, the only BAD I see in it is you are excluding the west side of the Grove. and it seems to me that side is the one that needs the most improvement, it looks neglected, and run down. Nothing at all like Up and down Grand Ave. Which still has it's old world charm and new and trendy resturants and stores. Lets not Keep improving what looks good but bring up what needs to be fixed, then the Grove will all rise at the same time.
Good Thinking !! but i just can't help stop to think. Politics and hidden agenda's always have a way of ruining a GOOD IDEA. Why is the West side of the Grove not involved? (this time)? AGAIN???
BID's cover specific areas. If it covered the whole town, it would not be a BID, it would be a City. The West Village is up for it's own BID. Ask Dave Collins about it before you trash it since you obviously don't know what a BID is.
Grape is right. Makes no sense in a BID to cover the whole town. If Village West needs more police on the streets and the Center Grove does not. That won't work.
If the Center Grove wants to promote and advertise hotels and the Village West has no need for that, that is not going to work.
Look up BIDs before you trash them. The whole point of a BID is to cover a small specific area, not the whole village.
NYC has a bid on every main street, but ONLY that street ie, 42nd, 34th, Broadway, etc. are part of that specific BID. Not all of Manhattan! So 34th Street runs itself, 42nd street runs itself and so on. All part of NYC, but all separate BIDs.
No need to insult, I just wanted to know why the BID did not START with the west Side BID. that looks run down!!!!! Why didn't That agenda pass first rather than "being up for it's own BID"
2nd. It just seems like the The West Village, is always 2nd and that is the way it looks literaly. As second class compared to the Rest of the Grove . That is what i am trying to say.
Grape, To be fair and more accurate in comparison, David was hired and gets a salary as Executive Director. It's his job. While it may not be "20 hours a day," It is also a project he whole heartedly believed in since before it became his job, and his prior involvement with making this happen for downtown Grove is how he ended up as director.
There many civic minded hard working people in the Village West who also work long hours towards similar initiatives. This year, sadly, we lost two, Will Johnson, who passed away in spring, and the Yvonne McDonald, who passed away last month.
Some of the readers commenting on the need for improving the Village West business corridor will be happy to learn that there are are plans on the way for the improvement of Grand Avenue retail corridor to be developed by Pointe Group Advisors, for mixed use in a pedestrian friendly design by local architect Max Strang. The project includes a much discussed grocery store, office and other retail space, and has been previously reported in this blog.
Some further comments to clarify the BID and the matter of Village West...
Although there are some 1500+ BIDs in the United States including one in Coral Gables along Miracle Mile, the Grove BID will be the first in the City of Miami. As such, there were countless legal and procedural issues that had to be resolved. Key to this success was a compact, contiguous block of commercial properties with common problems and aspirations.
For better or worse, Village West at present has several "gaps" with residential buildings along Grand Avenue before one gets to a contiguous cluster around Douglas Road. Further, since a BID is by definition a self-assessing tax district, inclusion of Village West would have imposed arguably disproportionate tax increases on very small businesses. Now that a BID will at long last exist in Miami, it can serve as a model should Village West merchants wish to band together to form a similar entity with a focus on issues more closely tailored to their own needs.
If 42nd St. is a BID and 34th St. is a BID it would make sense that Grand Ave. a short continuous
avenue would have benefitted under BID, make it inclusive. David Collins certainly would have been up for that challenge. Why the separation always?
SORRY, I didn't mean to make anyone upset. Thank you for advise I will try to contact his staff next week. I do apologize.
OK. This is excellent.
Goodness knows that business in the Grove is painfully lacking. Note the failures of power players Banana Republic, The Limited, Planet Hollywood, Borders, News Cafe, Old Navy.
I look forward to the ACTUAL improvements that will occur.
