"Now that's a tourist!"

I heard this woman talking to her daughter, explaining things to her with such authority even though she was wrong about some things.

They passed me as I was taking pictures for the Grapevine, she said very loudly to her daughter, so that I might hear: "Now that's a tourist," pointing as if I was some exhibit in the zoo or something. I guess the camera and my t-shirt that said, "Coconut Grove," gave her the wrong impression.

I think she meant it as a put down. Guess she didn't realize that tourists pay a lot of the bills around here and are very much encouraged. But I got a laugh out of it and watched as they went on their merry way, she filling her daughter's head with wrong info and the daughter just listening and enjoying the day out with her mom.

Sounds like a few people have jumped to conclusions. Assumptions shouldn't be made on what people wear or on partially heard conversation.

It wasn't a partially heard conversation, she walked by, pointed at me and said at the top of her lungs, "Now that's a tourist!" She intended that I hear it.

You should have come back with, "With my Euros I am interested in purchasing this block of property."

Egads! Tourists should be required to wear armbands for easy identification by loud-mouthed (and deaf?) locals trying to train children to spot unusual flora and fauna. Do you suppose she gives extra points if the kid can identify the nation of origin of a tourist? Does she keep a "life list"?

I'm sorry to say that there are not a lot of tourist paying a lot of bills in the Grove, just look at all the empty stores and restaurant chairs. In other states communities encourage outside artist who then create interest in the arts that in turn cause people to become interested in these art communities. If you try this in Coconut Grove all you get are a lot of code enforcement officers issuing citations. Look at Miami Beach and its recent successes! Most of the artist simply moved away from the Grove and settled in Wynwood, Miami Beach and Micanopy, Florida. Talk about being short sighted.
