A letter from Monty Trainer

Dear Friends,

It is with great pleasure that I write on behalf of my friend and our State Representative Carlos Lopez-Cantera who is up for re-election on November 4th. Carlos has been representing our community in Tallahassee for the last four years, and we could not have asked for a more effective or responsive elected official for our area. While in office, Carlos has been a champion of Property Tax Reform, sponsoring seven different property tax bills including a 1.35 % property tax cap similar to proposition 13 from California. He also sponsored and passed the toughest mortgage fraud legislation in our State's history.

Carlos has also been extremely attentive to the needs and issues pertaining to our beautiful Coconut Grove. He regularly attends community meetings. homeowner association meetings, and Grove events, and not just at election time. He has addressed issues and concerns of the Grove such as the safety in the CVS parking lot on Grand Avenue, street lighting throughout the Grove, and the noise ordinance. He has sponsored specific legislation to help our Business Improvement District in the heart of the Grove, and has also named streets for some of the dear friends and community leaders we have lost like our friend Will Johnson.

For these reasons and many others, I ask you to support the best legislator that Coconut Grove has ever had. Oh.... and did I mention that he lives in the Grove. Maybe that's why he sees our issues through our eyes because he is one of us. Thanks for your support and if you have any questions about Carlos feel free to call him at 305-461-0300. Carlos is also endorsed by our District 2 Commissioner Marc Sarnoff.

Politics as usual.

Anyone who lives in the Grove KNOWS how poorly it is represented by out-of-touch officials. I could list 2 dozen specific examples, at least, but hey, this might not even be posted or read. What a Joke who ever this Monty person is. I wonder what are his personal interests with these typical politicians who DO NOT represented Coconut Grove well at all, as we all know. Give me a break..

Carlos Lopez-Cantera lives in the Grove, comes to Grove events, and is quite in touch with us. I am an active Democrat, but knowing Carlos and having seen what he has done for our community first-hand, he has my strong support, even though he is a Republican. Those who know me well know that it takes A LOT for me to endorse a Republican. Carlos Lopez-Cantera has my endorsement. We'll work on him and, over time, like the other young Cuban Republicans I know, he'll realize he's with the wrong party. Until then, he's our neighbor and is in touch with our community.

Carlos is very active in the Grove, lives in the Grove and has a presence in the Grove. He is a good guy and supports us. I don't know who Carlos is but if he doesn't know Monty Trainer he hasn't lived here very long and should not be so quick to be so negative. Has he ever heard of Monty's Restaurant or the Coconut Grove Arts Festival...well Monty Trainer is Pres of the Arts Festival. Carlos, stop by his office in the Mayfair and meet him or call Carlos Lopez-Cantera and set up a meeting with him. Do something besides jumping into the negative pool.

Carlos Iglesia,
Hate to break it to you Bucko, but your comment "who ever this Monty person is" pretty much confirms that you yourself are a johnny-come-lately blowhard who doesn't know squat about the Grove.
Monty may well be the best known long time supporter of all things Coconut Grove and you don't even recognize the name? You may want to brush up on that wise observation "Tis best to be thought a fool than to speak up and remove all doubt".

If he supports capital punishment for convicted corrupt officials, then he has my vote. That is the only way candidates should be considered in this town. And the tax cap is a good deal IF he can get it approved.

Lopez-Cantera seemed like a good person when I met him.

He was genuinely interested in hearing my concerns, if I had any.

Yes, actually Lopez-Cantera seems like a good guy, I've also met him and talk to him now about specific issues. He is from the Grove, a cyclist too around here.

My main point was that for this Monty person to even suggest that the Grove is greatly represented Politically is just obviously absurd.

And, actually, regarding certain specific issues like the Grove Marina Building or Bicycling/running/walking around the Grove, Mr Lopez-Canteras has repeatedly tried to changes things to no avail with the commissioners. They won't move or change things, improve the Waterfront, unless People like you, the NorthGrove, Village Council, Sailers Club intervene.

And that you have Done, Mr "Trout" anonymous man, by labeling people here. I was referring to specific issues while you resort to individual attacks, while you, you 2, the other "anonymous" probably don't even move a finger or spend any time trying to do something positive for this community.

Anonymous, I probably know Monty's better than you ever would, after 20 years in Miami, and almost fours years living less than a block away.

What's your point, and what's your name?

We have better representation in the Grove than we ever have. Can you even name one thing Johnny Winton ever did for the Grove and don't bring up negative stuff. You can't. Sarnoff has done more in less than 2 yrs than Winton did
in 7. Carlos Lopez-Cantera works hard for the Grove too - if you have an issue call him and see how receptive he is. And you will see results.

Again, Lopez-Cantera sounds like a very nice guy, motivated, honest.

But he has himself claimed to me that he has tried many times to do various things about the Water Front, The Biking Pathetic roads we have, and others, with no results "like hitting a wall" he said.

To say that the Grove is greatly represented on City Hall and by the City of Miami is just absurd.

How many specific examples of that obvious fact do you need? The Water Front, The Grove Marina Building, the "information" Booths, the Stores on Grand Av, the West Groves Miseries, The NorthGrove Struggles, The Sailors Club battles, the Tax disparity with the City of Miami, Biking paths, Parking scenarios, how many more specific examples? Lighting in certain areas, or lack thereof, Parks maintenance, flooding areas whenever it rains a little like tonight, etc, etc, etc.If you need further details please give me your Name, "Anonymous" and I would happily oblige, issue by issue.

Ask Carlos Lopez-Cantera about his frustration dealing with the City of Miami and the City Hall Commissioners regarding these and other items.

Where are the results you are talking about? If it were for local association groups like the Village Coucil, YourGrove, NorthGrove, Central, West Grove the City of Miami and City Hall wouldn't do a thing for us.

When you are one Commissioner against 4 others, you are hitting a wall. Sometimes we get lucky with 2 votes. Trying counts for something. Everytime an issue comes up does not mean that you get results immediately. You list the new group Your Grove-what have they done except express their frustration? They are trying and we all are. It is frustrating, but we all still keep trying and with Carlos L-P and M.Sarnoff we are better off than we ever have been.

Anonymous, who are you and what do you know about what we are doing at YourGrove?

All you did here on this comment is ratify what I have been saying all along here. Carlos L-P and Mr Sarnoff may very well be better than we ever had before, as far as a fair representation for the Grove by the City, but the Grove still is hardly well-represented on numerous specific issues.

So your point, Mr Anonymous, is sit back, do nothing and criticize others who try to do something, like our various community organizations who manage, for instance, to stop a Building from being constructed like the one here at the Grove Harbor Marina? Or monitor the Tree cutting at Kennedy Park, talking to City Hall people and all the Grove Associations?

You make absolutely no sense, sorry Mr. anonymous. DO something yourself instead of saying close to nothing positive.

To 'Iglesia'....who I am and what I may know about the Grove shall remain ANON... Your name takes up all the available print space I have noticed. Did you get fired from a regular job or did your PROZAC prescription expire ?

Ok, Mr. ANON, for the last time, you make ABSOLUTELY no specific point here. Except personal attacks. If you want to meet me one day, instead of talking crap here, please don't. No more time for wimps like you.

How can a state Rep. get a street named after someone? That's done on a city level.
Myabe over reaching a bit for credit on that one.
Cantera might be a nice guy but he is part of the pro development, anti-environmental, regressive taxing Republican majority that is crippling this state.
Where did he stand on the Home Depot Issue?
