Nikki Coconut Grove closes for good
They blamed the location, being far from Center Grove, but they really weren't that far. The Sonesta is hoping another restaurant will take over the spot soon.

could it have been poor marketing? what if they moved it to tutu tango's spot? or above chilis?
It was a stupid concept for the Grove to begin with. If people really want to spend $15 on a cocktail in a place where it's "see and be seen," they'll take a drive to SoBe and get the "real" thing. The "real" Grove is more down-market, and I mean that in the nicest possible way. We're not into snob appeal, and clubs that come in to dry to bank on snob appeal just aren't going to cut it.
That's my theory, anyway.
The Grove is not Miami Beach. They were trying to force a round peg into, well, let's just call it a "trapezoidal" hole.
Lousy, lousy, lousy location. There is a reason that there have been very few takers for that spot, ever since the Sonesta opened. How long did Nikki last? How long did Tina Steakhouse last?
Nikki just doesnt fit the Grove, plain and simple. The location is also probably part of the problem but at least they made efforts to market the place somewhat.
Speaking of crappy locations and restaurants that dont market themselves at all - how long do you think Anokha can stay open? Ive walked by there countless times and Ive never seen more than 4 people inside... What happened to all who raved about this place at its old location? Where is the loyalty?
Umm, call me crazy, but isn't part of opening a business doing research on the past performance of other businesses in that spot? Plus, practically every other Nikki Beach is located ON THE SAND ON A BEACH...Hello! Gee, I didn't see either around there. I am sorry that people who have money to invest into the grove's business scene don't throw their money at things the grove needs...I love ice cream and night clubs, but I don't think the grove needs anymore of either...The bookstore and the artists are glimmers of hope that things will maybe head in the right direction! More power to 'em!!!
It kills me to see places like Pisco completely empty most of the time. I do agree that they should have known the location may not work for a restaurant. Cielo failed after another restaurant closed at that site and unfortunately Pisco probably not last long either.
Another important message to the owners of Crazy Pianos (that's still coming, right?): Consider your target market and its link to your location. We students, hippies (even if at heart), tourists, and weekend warriors that lovingly frequent the grove for a "night out" are less worried about style and glamour in exchange for a cover charge and high drink prices, more focused on a casual, great time without breaking the bank.
Pisco's doesnt do anything to bring people to its not-so-great location. Same with Anokha. The "if you build it, they will come" mantra doesnt work in the Grove. It is sad because Pisco's actually has unique and good food.
I think that Nikki Coconut Grove fulfilled its existential destiny by having Jennifer Aniston dine there.
could have been as simple a reason as the food was mediocre
