My yearly hate-fest with Coral Bagels

I went to Coral Bagels as some of you suggested, to get some old-fashioned chicken soup for my cold. I forgot how bad that place is.

First off, they didn't have chicken soup, I got a beef noodle which wasn't bad. But the rest of the food there makes my skin crawl. And the place itself looks varmint and rat infested. I am not saying it is, and I am sure it isn't, but it just looks like it.

I honestly would love to know why people go there. Is it because it's cheap, which I don't think it is? Or that everyone is on a high cholesterol heart-stopping diet these days? I see people I know there all the time, as I did today, I am tempted to ask what the attraction is, but I never do.

I'm not trying to be funny, but there is no customer service, and according to some old man next to me and the old busboy who works there, there literally is no manager. No one runs the place. People wanted to speak to the manager and were told there is no manager.

One waitress served all tables and two others sat there and watched as they did other things like fill the salt shakers and roll napkins. Neither did anything to help the one struggling girl.

They were out of everything I wanted -- everything health-related, they had nothing turkey-related or salad-related, but all the lard and fat items they had in large supply. And even with all that lard and fat, the food tastes terrible. How do you ruin a french fry? They need to remove the kids from the kitchen and get some real chefs or sandwich makers from the old school.

Also, I don't like the way anyone can just reach in and grab the potato salad and cole slaw and stuff. The food preparers should only do that, not any staff member that walks by. I think it's unsanitary.

The service was slow -- I honestly waited 45 minutes for a sandwich. I waited another 15 minutes for the check, even though she knew I was through. I finally just got up and went to the counter myself and paid without a check.

One customer got up, got his own coffee and then got his two friends their drinks.

Guess that was my yearly trip. I'll forget a year from now how I hate it and go back, but until I do, that's it for me and Coral Bagels.

Yes, I too think that Coral Bagels is a little to gnarly. I like gnarly, like gnarly cool but that place is more gnarly gross.

For chicken soup - try Bagel Emporium. It isn't too far from the grove and they make an old fashioned one. A little gnarly too but they know what they're doing and the service is good. I like the matzo ball with some noddles too! Add a bagel or bagel chips and you have a meal for under $5.

I also hate that place!! One time, a few years ago, I found hair in my food twice in the same day!! Once in my eggs and once in my friends cream cheese. I got so grossed out I banned it for years years. When I finally went back, not too long ago, I remembered why I stopped going in the first place. And the truth is, you can an awesome breakfast for two people, including french bread w/butter and jelly, at LeBouchon for less than $20, and they'll even throw in a couple of free mimosas. I don't know why anyone would even go to Coral Bagels. GROSS!

I eat there quite often for Saturday or Sunday brunch and I enjoy it every time. Look, I know its no Foccacia, but your comments take an elitist tone like you walk in there expecting marble floors and chandeliers. Your comment in the previous post about Gables Diner supports this theory. That isnt even a diner in my book. The food isnt great and the prices are outrageously expensive. I know youre likely to get upset by me saying this, but Im just callin em how I sees em. Youve been to Coral Bagels before too so you shouldve known what you were walking into.

I suppose Coral Bagels are supposed to have turkey items and other stuff that will satisfy the most nitpicky of eaters too, huh? You cant expect a diner to cater to everyone nor can you expect someone to run their business like you believe they should. Ever heard of an egg white omelet with tomatoes and mushrooms? Thats pretty healthy in my book and I get that often with a side of bacon, homefries, and a cup of tea for a nice price of about $5. If you didnt like what they had to offer, you couldve left to try somewhere more fitting to your needs. I did that last week at Le Petit Paris. I didnt like anything they were offering on the menu so I left and went elsewhere for my brunch.

This place is an old school diner that hasnt changed in years and I like that. When I think of a diner, I think of greasy eggs, homefries, grilled cheese, patty melts, and fries. Also, at a diner, you dont pay a waiter/waitress. You walk to the cashier and pay. If you havent got your bill, ask for it. Seems pretty simple to me.

Bottom line is that if you dont like the way things work there, dont go. Its that simple. Thats one less person in line for the many of us who enjoy taking our time having brunch. Blasting a place on your blog because its not your cup of tea doesnt do any good for anyone. For someone who is all about supporting Grove businesses, this post sure took a step in the other direction.

I hardly call hating Coral Bagels being elitist. It's a dump, the food sucks and apparently you have never eaten in a real NY deli or you would know.

They have turkey and turkey products like turkey pastrami on the menu. If they aren't going to serve it, they should remove it from the menu.

Where does it say, "Coral Bagels - A Real NY Deli"? This diner is obviously beneath your standards for an eating establishment. BM never said it was great food, he just enjoys it and so do I. Its not for everyone though. I guess Im just a cheap guy who likes cholesterol, heart-stopping food.

Next time try a raisin bagel and cinnamon coffee. Yum! Grape, I love you but you are a snob. Coral Bagel is what it is, and lots of us love it for that.

I've had mixed service at CB over the past year or so. Sometimes painfully slow, sometimes quick and efficient. Doesn't seem to matter whether they're busy or not, either.
I generally don't walk in there expecting health food, sparkling cleanliness, or even for them to have everything on the menu. I expect nothing more from a decent, cheap "greasy spoon" diner.

My only complaint is how small the parking spaces are in the front. My wife's MINI barely fits!

Not quite sure how I am a snob, I eat at McDonald's and Taco Bell every other day. I just hate Coral Bagels. I went for chicken soup which many of you suggested and they didn't have chicken soup.

They had turkey pastrami on the menu, I ordered that, they didn't have turkey pastrami.

I ordered a turkey club, which was on the menu, they didn't have any turkey. That's being a snob?

I didn't go for health food. I went for chicken soup to get rid of my cold. When they didn't have it I tried to eat something healthy, which wasn't to be.

I went in there a couple of weeks ago to meet a friend for coffee and someone parked so close to my 2-seater sports car, I had to crawl in thru the passenger side and pulled my back. I went back in to ask who had the SUV out there and no one claimed it.

Coral Bagels really sucks i hate it!!! The people there are really rude, service stinks, the place is very very dirty, and the management is clueless. they are all in a daze. and by the way, what happened to the HOMEADE soup? anyone who actually like coral bagels must really be used to terrible food, terrible service, dirty places, and rude people. if this place stays in business it must be a miracle.
