Why live in Coconut Grove?

This in from Maria Freed, prez of Coconut Grove Park Homeowner's Association:

I'm getting an earful from the natives who are again getting restless with the continued effort to homogenize Coconut Grove. The CG Sailing Club will be a thing of the past, live-aboard sailors will be gone soon, artists are evidently breaking the law by putting their art work on their front property, and now the Peacocks should be removed. What about the iguanas that eat my Bougainvilleas or the noisy parrots that wake me up in the morning... are they also a nuisance? No amount of slick marketing campaign by the Chamber is going to undo the sanitation of our community. Folks who need a more controlled environment should consider moving across the highway to Coral Gables or perhaps up to Palm Beach... plenty of zoning laws there to keep everyone in an exalted monochromatic state.

The inference that there is a "slick marketing campaign by the Chamber" is an utterly bogus assertion without any basis in fact. The Chamber is hard-pressed just to keep itself afloat and is in no position to be running some slick marketing campaign. This was a transparent "straw man" attack which one would think would be beneath the dignity of the Coconut Grove Park Homeowners Association.

Maria, I hope you are speaking for yourself and not for the members of your homeowners group? I happen to live in your neighborhood and don't feel the same way.

Then why did you move to the Grove, JR?

Hi Maria,
I agree with you that the charm of the Grove is in its unique environment, and there is a risk of it morphing into Anytown USA as those very qualities for which many of us moved here go the way of the large trees that fall to make room for McMansions and such.

I did want to make one clarification. You know me from TreeWatch. I am also president of the Coconut Grove Chamber of Commerce, and while it delight me to say that financially we are doing way better than we ever have in previous years, we are, unfortunately, still nowhere near the numbers that would allow us to develop a marketing campaign, slick or otherwise. We do have a decent (or so I've been told) Newsletter, and I will be sure to out you and CGPHA on the mailing list.

Best regards,
Lili Dones

By the way, in a shameless plug, the Chamber is having a fundraiser Casino Evening on Sept 20. Its success will go a long way towards increasing our chances to have sufficient funding for marketing campaigns. So save the date and stay tuned for info on venue.
