Changes coming to Milam's
Walgreen's is moving to a free standing store at US1 and Bird Road and Payless shoe store will be leaving, so Milam's will expand into that space.
According to owner, Max Milam, the expansion will be a total renovation, inside and out, including new lighting, flooring, decor, and so on. Everything will be new and the larger space will allow for a larger selection of items and competitive pricing. Max Strang, local architect, designed the new store.
The exterior will feature local, natural stones including keystone and oolite bricks and a plant wall -- a "living wall." Permits were pulled and hopefully, the new store will be completed by next summer.

Well. Hope it works out. I personally like the small, semi raunchy, packed feel of the current store. But, hey, progress is progress.
Nice to hear Max is working on it. Makes me confident that the end result will be nice.
oolite brick? No wonder Milam's charges so much. Do you know how much an Oolite brick costs? And keystone? Now there's some expensive detail. But I'm sure that the cost of oolite brick and keystone was considered when pricing the project.
does anonymous prefer a tan stucco box? i'm glad that milam's is taking pride in how the store looks!
I didn't know you were paying for the reconstruction, anonymous 10:02. Would you like them to use a cheaper material to suit your pocketbook? Contact Max, I am sure he will accommodate you.
Does anyone know if the store is planning on closing during the renovation (i.e. like the movie theater will be doing?) or will it remain open while renovating? Hopefully it will remain open for the most part.
As a producer of oolite products, we do know how much it costs. I just didn't know that Milam's had that much money. Think about what it cost to mill an oolite bolder down to a brick and, well, its way expensive. Most millionaires get hives when they price that stuff. I would love everything to be in oolite and keystone, but only the wealthiest can afford it. (Unless, of course, they can get it through unlicensed people.)
look around the grove... that rock is everywhere. you can dig it up in your backyard, if you'd like. i built a low wall of the stuff for a cost very comparable to a concrete wall.
Yeah, Milam's! I'm amazed at how well they stretch to please both ends of the Grove's economic spectrum. All things to all people.
A great store and it has a bike rack (a poorly placed bike rack -- just try to fit your front wheel over that things, and it's also in the "smokers' lounge") but it's a bike rack at least. ...wonder how many months it took to be delivered (*cough* Cocowalk).
