The Center of the Grove may be shifting
I used to think The Bookstore was the center of town, but now I think the gym may be. I even saw the owner of another gym in the area at the Shaq gym! I'm telling you 24 Hour Fitness is the place. (Just don't go the time I do, I like it not so crowded).

what are the fees per month?
I think monthly is around $35, but you can get a really good deal on a lifetime membership for a few hundred dollars. Right now they are offering free weeklong passes to try it out.
Ooh, I am relocating back to Miami and currently have a 24 hour fitness membership here in Austin. How's the parking? I am going to be equidistance from the grove location and the gables onw.
You make it as if the center of the Grove is some high school hang out for popular people after school. It is a neighborhood/community. Where more would you expect than to find people that you know or are familar with their faces?
PS All the band geeks are at the Miami Music Conservatory.
I like Shaq's 24 Hr. Fitness as well, the only downfall is the closest one to me doesn't have an indoor basketball gym (actually it doesn't have a basketball gym at all for that matter) and I'm to lazy to go to the one on Pines Blvd. Oh well!
Once you get past the sales people, 24 Hour is a great gym. If you drive, they validate your parking, and so far for me, there's always been a treadmill or elliptical available when I want it. This is not a glamour place, it's a wear what you want to sweat in and work hard place. I like that. I haven't met anyone there yet (joined a month ago), but that's really ok.
Shaq's 24 Hour is the nastiest place that I have ever been to. The staff is downright arrogant, and unless they have a salesperson there to give you the tour then you cannot sign up, visit, or come in with the free 7 day pass.
I was given the phone number of the General Manager, and when I called he told me to call him the next day when he had more time because he was on his lunch hour.
