He wants to roll Miami Fire Dept. into County

This Friday, July 18 at 9:30 am, the County Commission will be holding a special meeting to propose changes to the County Charter.

County Commissioner Bruno Barreiro, who is Chairman has proposed the following special item #17: "Resolution calling a countywide special election in conjunction with a general election to be held Tuesday, November 4, 2008, for the purpose of submitting to the electors of the county the question of whether to amend the Home Rule Charter to require the Board of County Commissioners to transfer fire protection and rescue service from all municipalities to the county and provide a uniform countywide system of fire protection and rescue services."

Basically, he wants to abolish the Miami Fire Department and have the county take over. This will not only hurt services in the area, it will increase the cost of fire services for the Grove and the whole City of Miami.

If you are against the change and putting this amendment on the ballot, please email Comm. Barreiro at
bruno@miamidade.gov and cc his Legislative Assistant Marlene Avalo at avalo@miamidade.gov . Also you may call his office at (305) 643-8525.

Actually, this is not an issue of abolishing the Miami Fire Department. They will still be there, just with more services and way more cost effective. Whenever there is a big disaster or fire, Metro is better equipped. For the residents of the City of Miami it would be a blessing. I think there is a lot of self interest involved in not letting 17 go to the residents in November. What else is not mentioned is resolution 16 that overrides the home rule and gives all municipalities their own fire department. This is not cost effective. If there was a wild fire in Doral and it was widespread, they would call Metro Dade for help. The same way Metro Dade put out the cargo ship fire that City of Miami tried and did not put out.

You say "This will not only hurt services in the area, it will increase the cost of fire services for the Grove and the whole City of Miami." Any proof? Support? How about we put it to a vote? The same thing with the $3billion Miami project scandal. This County is so corrupt and they should all be voted out. Rolling City of Miami fire dept. into the COunty will help efficiency and give better service. Polls show that 85% of Dade County wants a uniform fire rescue department ... look it up. By the way, 75% of all stats are made up.

The truth of the matter is that there are not many services that Miami-Dade can provide that City of Miami does not have already or could receive from other great departments like Coral Gables and Miami Beach. It will cost you more with less quality care. Miami-Dade has always wanted to(rule the world) and says that they are doing good for the communities. Then why does everyone want to leave, ie Pincrest, Palmetto Bay, Surfside, most wanting to start their own fire dept.

Having your own FD is a glamor statement. Makes the city leaders feel more important. More people in uniform to order around. There are no cost savings to have your own. Quite the contrary. Economies of scale say a larger department saves money. No more fire stations across the street from each other.

Does anyone have any real data on how this concept has worked so far in Broward?

I don't know about the Fire Dept., but the county is more than welcome to pick up my recyclables. They do a much better job. They pick up all your plastics and your batteries. The city will toss it back to the curb. Once I put my batteries in and not only did they throw them into the street, but they were run over and destroyed by cars making for an environmental mess. And what should we do with batteries in our city? Get into your gas-guzzling car and drive them to some obscure location. I'm sure that most of our plastics and batteries end up in the landfills with our other trash to be enjoyed by our future generations. Sorry kids.
The city pretends it's green, but only for publicity. They want us to stop drinking bottled water, but they do a terrible job of recycling.

Everybody wants everything put to a vote - we are a REPRESENTATIVE democracy. We elect people that we think can represent our interests. If they don't, then vote them out when they come up for election.

We are not a PURE democracy (think Athens in ancient Greece), so everyone doesn't go to the polls on every issue. You don't like what your commissioner, representative, mayor, etc is doing, then vote them out or run yourself.

Forcing a citizen vote on everything would only grind government to a halt moreso than it already is and increase the cost of government to pay for all the special elections everyone always wants to have.

Why do you think businesses have a board and managers and not just a vote by all the employees?

Ha! Not just the City of Miami, but the whole world pretemds it's green but only for publicity!

The guy driving the Prius tells the world he is morally superior to the guy driving the SUV.

One day when VH1 does "I Love the 00's, series they will do a segment of this ridiculous hoax of how the planet is going to melt & how we all lapped it up.

Funny thing, I read an article yesterday that since the price of gas hit $4+ a gallon, Al Gore has been hanging low.

This is called reality!

PS You cannot imagine the amount of CO2 that the City of Miami Fire Department emits into the sky with those big fire trucks. I say let the homes and fields burn./sarcasm off

Our local FD does an excellent job. They know the neighborhood and neighbors, they are very professional. We don't need the county getting involved.

Cities are leaving the county in droves for a reason. Why go backwards? In fact, the Grove itself needs to un-annex itself from Miami already.

Yes, The Miami Fire Dept are VERY professional! Professional tennis players and body builders, that is all I see happening in passing here in Coconut Grove. Way to go tax dollars!

City of Miami could save their taxpayers alot of money by joining Miami Dade Fire.

The county uses fire trucks for fires and medical calls. The city has the fire trucks sitting in the station only for fires. So 99.99% of the time, their personnel get to eat, sleep, watch t.v., exercise and not go on one single call, unless it is a fire or fire alarm activation. This is a waste of money.
Take the money you will save from your fire dept and build two stadiums!

That fire truck is sitting there waiting for that next call, it would suck if that next call was for you and it was out or sent out to cover other districts like Miami-dade does all the time. You always see the new at night, house burned out and down, that is due to 15 min. responce times. You will not see that in the city. Firefigthers are paid for what they will do. Which is everything if they need to. When someone calls 911 it is when they have run out of options.

I see Miami dade fire trucks in our stations sometimes and then they leave. One day I asked them as they left and they said that it is called a move up. They said when the city has no fire fighters to work at the station, they call Miami dade to work at their stations. I remember that was the same day there was a large fire on the miami river.
