Art doings at the Windisch-Hunt Gallery

Betty Ann Pober and Jeff Passage, both artists at the Windish-Hunt Fine Art Gallery (2911 Grand Avenue), check out Betty Ann's window. The art in the window is changed every few weeks or so.

The Children's Trust Miami Heart Gallery project is still running until September 7. The gallery is running on summer hours: Tuesday thru Friday, 6 to 10 pm; Saturday, noon to 10 pm, Sunday, noon to 9 pm, closed Monday.

AnnaMaria Windisch-Hunt informs me that the Children's Trust is interested in doing a more "formal show" this fall, maybe to coincide with the Art Stroll.

Now speaking of the Art Stroll is it still the first Saturday or is it now the second Saturday? I am getting conflicting stories. Seems like no one wants to take it on and do it right.

No answer on the Art Stroll. No one cares it seems.

I care about the art stroll, and I care a lot about what is happening to the the merchants in our community. Their quality of life is important for the people who live in the Grove, as they are an integral part of the lives of all of us Grovites.

However, it seems as though lately there are as many Art Strolls as there are artistic communities around Miami. All of these are vying for the same piece of pie, so to speak. So, I propose that we begin anew this Fall (we can begin this, on Sunday, September 28th) as the Windisch-Hunt Fine Art Gallery sponsors it's en plein air competition for the fifth year in Coconut Grove.

The Art Stroll, being held on a Saturday, is competing with all of these like events in other communities. The Grove has more to offer than just art; We have the view of the bay, we have our historic sites, a walking district that everyone can enjoy. This is what we should be promoting, along with our long-standing tradition as an art community.

Therefore, let us choose to begin with one Sunday in the Grove, and start a new tradition which brings Sundays to be synonymous with a visit to Coconut Grove.

I think Saturday is best. It makes it a night out for those of us who don't usually go out. Start off with dinner at one of our small but great restaurants, then stroll, look at art and drink some wine. Maybe even make an early visit to Flavour. Makes me feel young again :)

To Anonymous,

I never insinuated that we negate Saturday nights; After all, we are open regardless, over the entire weekend. Not to mention the fact that with several five-star hotels within walking distance there will always be a demand for the aesthete nightlife which the Grove fosters on the weekends.

What I am proposing is to be expansive and to reassert the Grove as a unique destination which also benefits the merchants, who would close earlier in the evenings than the galleries. In supporting a cohesive community structure with the added business, everyone benefits.

Saturday nights will still be as vibrant as ever, but we can present a new facet in the larger arena of what's going on in Miami. I say we should abandon nothing, but instead revisit everything that's always been good about the Grove.

annamaria,
Not to pick nits, but there are actually no Mobil Five Star Hotels in all of Miami and Miami Beach, the Mobil rating being the "real" star rating system. The Ritz Carlton is rated four stars by Mobil. Some of these properties may claim "five" stars, but that is patently bogus and a fantasy of their marketing departments.
