There's always something to complain about

I can't believe that some people are complaining about the art galleries taking up empty storefronts in the Grove. Are empty storefronts better? Do you like the cardboard covered windows instead? Even the art covering the windows of the old Borders location is a hell of a lot better than empty windows.

Most of us like the art, if you don't, how about you get off your ass, contact the store owners and make some arrangements to find them renters? You'll get a commission, the store owner will have a renter and the artists will be thrown out onto the streets. Then you'll be happy.

I happen to think this is one of the nicer things that these landlords do. It sort of negates their overpriced rents when they do find renters.

I think youre jumping to conclusions again Grape. I think the point that the poster in the other thread was trying to make was that, while the art may be nice, its a band-aid solution. I think he is looking for whats being done about a permanent solution? Thats how I took it anyways. You really like art and artists so I can see why you may have gotten defensive. I think that poster is someone who wants to see real businesses in the Grove rather than an abundance of art, thats all.

I personally think the art taking up the windows is better than nothing but empty storefronts but I can accept other opinions. Different strokes, different folks.

The real solution would be to not let giant developers who can afford to keep rents high while storefronts stay empty build in the grove. Instead support small developers that will rent at a reasonable rate--maybe we'll get some real art galleries moving in instead of the freebee bandaid.

Borders, News Cafe, Banana Republic, Old Navy, and Planet Hollywood all moved out because of poor sales volume. These are heavy hitters. The city of Miami has not done enough to improve thier most charming business district. The Chamber of Commerce has taken noticable steps - billboards, the nice blue signage, the "Get Your Grove On" ads, to name a few. The City Commission has an obligation to this area to beef up the support!

"Not to let"???? Who's "not letting"?

There is a very American concept. It is called Private Property.

You own the place, you do whatever you want within certain limits (think X-Rated store facing a street...).

Private Property. Great concept.
