Lowe's and Home Depot fight very similar
Our own Sue McConnell and Harry Emilio Gottlieb were quoted in the article.
Thanks to the fight by Sue and many others, the Home Depot in the Grove fits in well. It isn't the mega-structure that was planned and now Milam's will be expanding next door into the Walgreen's space when Walgreen's moves.
Walgreen's has broken ground on US1 and Bird Avenue, they prefer a free-standing store, which is great for Milam's. We may finally have a decent size supermarket in the Grove after so many years.

That milams is disgusting. I wish they would just close already and make room for a publix. It's a real pain having to drive to the gables just for grocery shopping.
Whem Milams is expanded, it will provide a much nicer, more modern, more varied store. It will carry gourmet, organic and IGA brand goods which is their store brand items. They do have a great seafood dept.
Will they also keep their high prices? Get them out and get Publix in!!!
It seems to me that most of the people complaining about the Lowes have not even been out to that area.
They're complaining that it's past 137th Avenue, and yet, on the south-side of 8th Street past 137th there's a ton of new shopping centers. There are Starbucks, McDonald's, GameStop, Bank Atlantic, etc.
The proposed area is basically an empty field next to some industrial areas where a bunch of vehicles are always parked on a bunch of grass.
These people should have complained about the 836 extension, which probably had a bigger environmental impact than opening a Lowes on a busy intersection.
Have you guys seen the amount of houses and new developments that have popped-up between 8th Street and Bird Road past 137th? It's astounding!
Milams will have their own brand of merchandise (IGA brand)- the same way Publix has their own brand.
its interesting how people actually clamor for the rip that is publix.
this blog noted sweetbay, a chain all over fla except here. sweetbay is what to ask for, not another monopolistic publix w bad produce and overpriced meat.
We at Eye on Miami had a different take on that article in the Herald -- It missed the elephant in the living room. The location outside the Urban Development Boundary make it a whole different ball game. And we thought the comparison was not germane because the neighbors living near the Lowe's site were more in favor of it than not because a school ws being dangled in front of their nose. And to the person above, go west young man...there is nothing as you go west but the Everglades....because people throw garbage on a site or let it degrade, does not make it not worth the trouble. Lowe's is about a change in the Comprehensive Master Plan...not recommended by the DCA.
You've got it G.o.D! (ohh - that's funny, just noticed your initials)
I think BOTH fights (grove/everglades) were/are worthy causes. We're letting an acre be taken for every inch we give. Enough already!
As long as there is no capital punishment for corrupt politicians there will not be any hope, especially in Miami, they will allow construction wherever the carriers of fat envelopes ask. Capital punishment for corrupt politicians will guard all the boundaries and mend the broken ones. Home Depot in the Grove was a bad idea and still is a bad idea.
where can i buy my wood, not at home depot, sunny isles has wood, you got wood?
Walgreens wanted a drive thru pharmacy and a 60 min. photo lab. Of course, CVS on Grand has one but it is usually 120 min. photo lab.
While Publix is cleaner (and their deli in South Gables sucks badly!!!!!) Milam has some really amazing fish (their tuna steaks), meat, wine selection and, believe it or not, yoghurts.
I already go there once a month or so. A bigger store will be a welcome addition. I would go more often, for sure. As to the prices... the Tuna steaks for $7.99 were $14.99 at Publix!
Wasn't Commissioner Sarnoff against any new development and wanted a moritorium on all new building?
What happened.
