Annoying Grove characters

Here is the 88 cents guy. As people walk by, he asks them for 88 cents for the bus. When he's not around, a well dressed woman walks up and down the street and she asks for cab fare. The bus is beneath her apparently.

I see this guy a lot too. A while back he asked for 80 cents on three consecutive days. I told him that he had had the same story the day before and he responded, "The bus never came."

It did make me laugh.

That's right, a sense of humor makes things we don't like or understand less annoying!

He's probably a pretty funny guy.

Thanksgiving night the well dressed woman asked my boy friend and I for $32.00 in cab fare. We felt her story was bogus. Next time I am going to offer to call the non emergency police line to get her a ride home. She put a real damper on our evening , so went left the grove earlier than planned.

I actually fell for the well-dressed woman. She told me that she needed a cab to Aventura and that the police had blown her off. I thought she really was just in the midst of the walk of shame from hell so I gave her a few bucks. I guess her story is more believable in the morning. Now I feel like an idiot :(.

I think it's hard to hold panhandling against anyone when people are big enough suckers to make the practice worthwhile. I realize that the instinct to give someone money on the street is generally well-intentioned (although it's used as a cheap way out of feeling guilty, I think), but people need to stop doing it: it's an insult to the working poor, -- of which there are many, many, many in Miami.

So here's my proposal: if you're going to make it illegal to beg, make it illegal to give.

Too many laws already exist. How about we just use our own best judgment without making things "illegal". What's with you people?!!!!

Question Authority! The only laws I abide by are Natural Laws, forever guided by my own acute moral compass. Yes, I may very well be one of the few that scoffs at self help and instructional how to be a better... books.

WAKE UP! WAKE UP! PLEASE WAKE UP!

I totally agree! There is nothing worse than walking down the street with the high of having consumed a $200 meal, only to be brought to an abrupt halt by someone asking for 80 cents. I soooo hate that.

But I have an idea. I think these people would feel better about themselves if they actually earned that little money. So, next time you are going to walk by eighty cents guy, make sure to bring a little shoe polish along. You can have him polish your shoes! It is win-win. And if you forget the shoe polish, just give the your address. I am sure he would love to clean your toilet or something for a little bit of extra money.
