Is it me or is the Somoto girl rude?

This is really bugging me. I wonder if the owners of Somoto restaurant on Commodore Plaza know how sarcastic and rude the order girl is on the phone. I cringe every time she answers.

She treats the caller like an idiot, always tries to get out of taking the order for some reason or other and she is just plain losing the place money. I had a large order I was about to place for a group of us here and I just ended hanging up because she treats me like crap every time I call. She just doesn't want to take phone orders it seems.

We ended up sending someone to Moon Thai, across from UM. It's quite a large order too, it's a shame Somoto isn't getting it. Another Grove business that lacks customer service skills. And I like them so much, but I don't think I'll go back. It's a shame -- the rest of the staff and the delivery guy are always so nice and friendly. But this one person is ruining the business for them.

Try calling now: 305-448-6172. Try to place an order and comment here letting me know how she was. Maybe it is just me. Maybe she's not that bad.

Sounds like maybe you order out too much?

Perhaps expect too much?

And, you may be a bit too yuppified.....?.

I say perhaps you can afford to learn how to cook at least a little bit?

God forbid a major natural or man-mande disaster should strike, I fear you will be the first casualty....

"Help!" I starving, I can't find my sushi!"

Yuppies get by in good times - but have zero survival skills, sorry....

It's just so sad :(

Is comment #3 a joke or what? I know Miami is not known for its good service, but since when is expecting "average" service a sign of being yuppified.

Perhaps the commenter IS the girl in question...?

Personally, I've always been a little skeeved out by that place. It does not seem to be very clean. That said, I think you made the right choice by going elsewhere. Sushi Maki and Matsuri ar both good choices.

Place is dirty, and the kind of cuisine and food they serve they need to be immaculately clean at all the time. Now for some reason people think just because it is in Coconut Grove it has to be dirty and has roaches and that is the furthest from the truth, Pommes and Pane and Focaccia are exceptions and they will cleanup a bit hopefully in the future. Oh by the way! make sure those are the raisins in chicken salad at Focaccia OK!!!!! Raisins don't move. Just to clear things up.

Dude, I sense a pattern with you. You focus on something or someone associated with what you perceive as a negative situation and make it personal.

Cases in point, the salmon lady at Fresh Market, the homeless guy who makes an ass out of himself in front of Subway or the innocent contracted city employee in the information booth.

Most of humanity tries to do their best. God has sent us all on different paths.

I recommend that you try and cook at home. It is very therapeutic.

he is upset with everyone who does not put out freebies for him, it is basically all joke, no matter how you look at it.

Tom spreads more money around this town than anyone. For you to say he wants freebies is a real joke. You obviously don't know him. He buys me lunch almost daily, he brings me coffee and pastries every time he is near my house and I know he does the same for many others in this town. You are the joke.

Im no fan of Somoto. The food is average and thats on a good day. The last time I ordered at a friend's house it took 2 hours to get our food which was ice cold by that time. After that it was no more Somoto for me.

I have to step in here and say that Tom comes into our place for coffee a lot. He has never asked for a freebie or expected one and he always leaves a large tip. He has even gotten coffee for the parking lot attendant just on a whim more than once.

He picks up the check for all his friends every time he is in our restaurant. Every single time.

Tom is so cool and is a god for making this website. He owns the grove. If Tom say no expansion, then we all should follow. If Tom says no Home Depot, we should all follow. If Tom ... well, you all get the point. Tom for Mayor!!

Come on, I like Somoto and the care free coziness it offers and the people are really cool, and the owner, John with his interesting ponytail is a true gentleman. I loved the food at his now gone Red Lantern Chinese restaurant as well, had some delicate authenticity about it. I do not know which girl you are talking about but, if it is that tall belle with that stunning natural auburn hair, then you may be completely wrong. Although I understand we do absolutely need people to be on the watch out for the good of the community vigilantly, I also see a pattern with your impressions of people, I say this with all the true respect I have for you.
By the way is it not time for a good Chinese restaurant in the grove again?

I'm always intrigued when religion is used as an excuse for people to be rude to one another or cause suffering. What an interesting perspective.

Ha. It just occured to me that if I had a bud whose business was a little slow, I might tell everyone how freaky/sexy/rude the person taking orders was. Just try it and see!

I'm not a fan of moaning about service day after day... but in this case I think the point is Somoto is a great place (LOVE some of their rolls), it would just be a shame for this one bad seed to ruin it. I've dealt with two different girls on the phone, one very polite and sweet, the other just blunt and unprofessional. Either they have a bi-polar girl working there or some intervention is necessary to ensure loyal customers stay loyal.

I can feel the love here? Have a heart folks we have all had bad rude service at some point. And I am sorry that homeless bum laying in front of the store would drive me away too. Perhaps Somoto could benefit from a mystery shopper who is objective and factual. Maybe the girl was having a bad day and night.

personally, I think that Tom needs a good dose of compassion. his posts are always bitchin and complainin' about someone, someplace, something! he must be perfection incarnate to maintain such a self-righteous, demanding attitude all the time.

Personally, I think you need to read things here with a grain of salt and realize it isn't easy to blog 365 days a year. Also, 99% of the posts are all good and happy things promoting the Grove, its businesses and residents. Yet you dwell on 1% of the posts which may be considered negative. Which are honestly constructive criticism.

He performs a wonderful FREE community service here for the Grove. Why don't you all calm down and stop picking at him? And if his posts are always bitchin and complainin' about someone, someplace, something, then he is doing a good job as a blogger, that is what bloggers do. What do you want the weather report posted here every day instead?

the night this was posted, i called the place and spoke to a girl. she was nothing but nice to me. being that i read this post prior to ordering, had she been rude to me, i would have asked to speak to the manager or someone there.

explain yourself and the situation. she could have just had a bad day, lord knows not everyone is all cheer 24-7, or maybe she just needs to be put in check if she's going to be dealing with the public.

Your criticisms are not constructive. They are often narrow-minded - to which you are entitled - after all this is Tom's Venting Post. So, as you have noticed, we, the readers, who are also your neighbors and friends, have the prerogative of keeping you in check.

It is a dialogue that we can all learn from daily.

Thanks.

I think that Tom does an incredible service for Coconut Grove! He keeps us abreast of all things Grove! I may not agree with him all the time, but he always has a good point.
Tom for mayor!!
