Helping Charlie Brown
For those who remember and know Charlie Brown, I thought you might be interested to know that Charlie was hit in the head and face with bricks by a couple of kids early one morning about three weeks ago just outside of the Barnacle on Main Hwy and Commodore Plaza. They still haven't caught the kids.
Charlie is a Coconut Grove curmudgeon. He hails from Memphis and was boyhood friends with Elvis Presley. He came to Miami in the '60s and opened the old Gaslight South in the Grove. Joni Mitchell, David Crosby and others of that era wandered through the place before they were well known. Charlie gave up the bar business and became a writer of merit. He worked for Jack King and the old Coconut Grover among other publications, and was a columnist on the old Biscayne Bay Tribune. He was a regular at the Taurus and is something of a well-known Grovite.
He is in the hospital, but when he recuperates, he will need a place to live. Deborah Crisp is collecting funds, like they used to do at The Taurus, for needy friends. Also, if anyone knows of a little place somewhere in the Grove, to please let Deborah know. If you would like to contribute, please make checks payable to CHARLES ELMORE, -- his legal name, and send in care of, Deborah Crisp, at 3109 McDonald St., Coconut Grove, FL 33133. Here phone number is 305-567-9802. Be aware, that the checks will not be cashed for awhile, until they determine what Charlie needs, and where they can be deposited.
Charlie had 13 hours of surgery done on his face and skull last Saturday. He is very depleted, weak, and gaunt. He sleeps most of the time, but he is communicative, though difficult to understand. There was some injury to his brain, which may or may not resolve itself. It's a wait-and-see situation.
Charlie NOW CAN have visitors. He is in the Ryder Trauma Building, room 394. The nurses' station is 305-585-1233, and should be called to confirm Charlie's location and visiting hours.
Deborah has been to see him every couple of days. Many people had cards returned, perhaps because he has been moved five times since he got there, and his last name is Elmore, not Brown. However, there were flowers by his bed today from Linda Murphy, who obviously found him. People can send cards to Deborah, and she can bring them along when she visits.

He was attacked with bricks? How horrific. I just can't imagine it. If I were the praying sort, I'd keep him in my prayers.
Ok we should be equally as freaked out about this as we are about the homeless guy who took the kid for a ride on his bike.
This happened weeks ago, and not a single email was circulated, no CrimeWatch report, and certainly not covered in the news, as the almost kidnapping incident was. This is terrible.
In New York they have "Crime Victims Compensation". I am wondering if the City of Miami has it-- they cover all your medical bill s if you are the victim of a crime, and provide assistance.
this is truly horrible..i hope they are caught!
I think that it is horrible...and no one is doing anything about it. More and more you see homeless people being attack...and by the way, I too have little one and it scares me that they can be taken away, however, two wrongs do not make it a right. Just because the kid that was taken for a ride by a homeless was not given the proper coverage, we should not forget what was done to poor Charlie Brown.
I was very sad to hear about Charlie. Deborah was good enough to share this information with many of us, former Grove residents as well as current. We wish him the best.

Charlie Brown Update
Hi Everyone,
I'm happy to tell you that Charlie has started to turn around. I visited him yesterday for about 1 1/4 hours, and he was fully alert and participatory. He has started eating on his own, and has gained a few pounds. We spent most of the time going through his personal possessions and sorting them out. He said it felt good to have something to do.
From what I experienced, I think he would enjoy more visitors at this time. He is still in the Ryder Trauma Center, room 378. However, he may be moved to rehab on the 4th floor within a week or less. If you want to visit, call 305-585-1249 to confirm his location. I brought him a big chocolate shake, and he finished the whole thing. He needs calories! He's been begging for a cigarette, so don't carry any into the room with you, so you don't have to lie when you say you don't have any!
I spoke with his Physicians Assistant today, who feels that he will go into rehab in the near future, if he continues the improvement I saw yesterday. He speculates Charlie would be released within 6-8 weeks. Based upon his abilities at that time, he may need a place to live, if he can live on his own, or be placed in an assisted living facility. Only time will tell. Charlie's vision is a big question mark. At this time, I would consider him legally blind. He will be evaluated at Bascom Palmer in the near future. This puts a big hitch on his being able to live on his own. If it turns out that he can, I'll be back to you all to help find a place for him, and perhaps contribute to his rent.
Charlie's sister, Sandi Askins hopes to get here from Texas by May 1st. She wanted to know if there are any hotels near the hospital. If anyone can be of assistance to her, you can e-mail her at sandi.askins@att.net.
Duane and I will be leaving for Indiana some time next week, but I will remain in constant contact with the hospital and keep you updated.
Love to you all,
Deborah Crisp
