Will Johnson

I heard from a neighbor that Will Johnson passed away in his sleep last night. I didn't know Will, but I knew of his many good works in the West Grove. He worked for Commissioner Carlos Gimenez, and he loved the West Grove and worked tirelessly for his neighborhood for years. He volunteered for the HOATA and for any other cause that helped the Village.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, March 8, at Elizabeth Virrick Park, 3255 Plaza Street, at 2:00 pm.

Will and Miyok welcomed me to the Village West community with a wonderful get together at their house last year. They said they knew I was from out of town and wanted to make sure I had plenty of friends to call on during the holidays. Aside from being St. Alban's number one champion in the last few weeks (http://www.miamiherald.com/news/miami_dade/east/story/429962.html) he had a real passion for fighting injustice and inequality. I hope that with his passing the Village West can move forward on resolving the many social and economic ills facing the area with committed leadership from all sectors (residents, government and ALL Grovites) and work towards leaving a legacy he would be proud of being a part.

Writing from afar, I had met and worked with Will during a summer internship I did while at Miami City Hall a few years ago. He truly was one of the individuals putting forth the right positive energy the Grove needs to continue being the beautiful diverse place it has been. I hope we all can unite a little more in the coming years ... individuals like Will would love to know unified progress can be made.

Okay, I'm confused. Wasn't Virrick Gym the old boxing gym at the airplane hanger that now houses Shake-A-Leg? And isn't Virrick Park the one on Plaza? Is there an old Grovite out there that can clarify?
Thanks. I don't want to go to the wrong place. I got an e-mail that said Virrick Gym and Park.
