Unfriendly neighbors

I know the Arts Festival can be a pain to many people who live in the Grove but sometimes people can be very unfriendly. Is this really necessary? It's bad enough when some people charge for parking on the swale, which is city property, but it's even worse when people block it to be nasty. Is a car or two going to ruin a person's day if it sits there for a few hours? The grass is all burnt up and crummy already.

Legally people can park there. I may just kick those pails over tomorrow and park there and see what happens. I think I would have the law on my side.

Pick up the pails in a civilized way, explain to the irate owner that the law says you can park there, then very visibly with your cell phone camera, take pictures of your car from every angle. Works every time.

Good job, Grapevine for pointing this out. Usually this behavior goes unnoticed. Some residents are very territorial, even regarding land that is designated as public right-of-way. Although, it is possible that this homeowner may have had a bad experience with visitors during a past art festival.

If they don't want parkers, tell them to request from the city that trees be planted there; these are the same people who want the Grove to thrive but don't want to help when people come in to eat and shop.

The Fest can bring some bad craziness, so for this neighbor it maybe their way of discouraging the presence of it in residential areas.

Yesterday eve my neighbor and I were walking our dogs in our N. Grove neighborhood when a beat up speeding car suddenly stopped by us for directions "to the Grove." Three obviously inebriated young hispanic men, no shirts, full of attitude and slang, were lost in the maze of our wonderful closed off streets. A nasty scene was avoided, just by not responding to the racist taunts coming from one who hopped out of the back seat, swaggering and bragging about how his pit bull would kill our stupid-ass dogs. It was truly bizarre.

Crazy! Scary! We quickly walked home, looking over our shoulders, commiserating on the good, the bad and ugly that comes with the art festival.

Be careful out there!

All of our grass looks bad right now because of the drought. The art show is three days, so that means cars coming and going for three days. If you have any doubt about what that does to the grass, have a look at the field at Coconut Grove Elementary on Tuesday.
A homeowner has stewardship of the swale around them. They cut the grass. They rake the leaves. I would rather see a temporary bucket there instead of those ugly pyramids people use. Also, if you border it with rocks, and one damages a car, the cops will site the driver, not the homeowner. The best answer would be to sell each spot for $10, like everyone else in the Grove. Or, put up a temporary baracade, like, let's see, a bunch of buckets!

Anyone can park there. Its city property, period. And its one 3-day weekend out of our 365 calendar days that you have to put up with it. Relax already. These sort of things happen in neighborhoods all over the country. In fact, its probably happening somewhere else right now but the neighbors dont care and actually enjoy the festival and the crowd it brings. Strange concept, eh?

Some of us have had the experience of people blocking our driveways, or dropping trash. I was also assaulted once by a guy after I yelled at him for running a stop sign. Luckily, I was armed, and once he realized that he might not win the "discussion," he backed off.

The house shown in the photo above is not so concerned with their grass today. They have a sign up saying "Parking $25.00, knock on my door." So enough with the bullshit about grass being torn up.

People are nasty at times. Case closed.

its not really grass. What we floridians call grass the rest of the country calls weeds. And they spend god knows how much trying to eradicate it from their real lawns.

I hope Sarnoff does not know where you live, he is on the warpath to get rid of guns in the City of Miami along with perserving trees and destroying Home Depot.

The nerve of this homeowner (and others like them) wanting to have a place for their friends and family to park when they come visit, or wanting to have access to their property, or wanting to make some money by letting people park in front of their house for a fee (and then probably cleaning up trash afterwards). So rude and nasty, seriously, people should be able to park wherever they want. Even if it blocks the driveway, house, front door, whatever, it's just 3 days!!!

Obviously, you didn't get the Arts Fest memo: Either you are with us, or you are with the really mean people who don't want anybody to have any fun.

years ago we raised money to do away with the on street parking in the center grove bought trees plants and dirt and made it fairly impossible to park in most of the area and force them to use the parking lots that are all over the grove, well of course there was not enough money to cover every square inch.... anyways my point is we have lots for a reason, people going to these events do some goofy crap in attempts to get free parking and yes they come back to their cars and toss all the trash from the day on your lawn street driveway etc.. screw em

p.s. it's late that may make no sense at all :p

Erik,
You made perfect sense. We were riding our bikes through the Grove today and I said,"Thank god the artshow is over."

Love all these people that move into the Grove, knowing the art show comes every Feb. like clock work, yet they bitch and moan about it. Same ones who move next to the bars and restaurants and then complain about noise.

dont get me wrong i love all the groves events but when i say go to southbeach for the boat show i dont drive up in someones yard in an attempt to save 5 10 whatever on parking i go to a lot, i just have no sympathy for people trying to save a few bucks by stealing my space, i mean this is supposed to be a world class event not a freakin swap meet show a little civility to the neighborhood that is your host ;)

I really don't think it is a matter of people trying to be cheap or "stealing spaces". There is NO PLACE to park during the festival. Lots are all full, also people try to avoid getting close to the center Grove because you end up sitting in never-ending traffic due to street closures. So people are grateful to find any open spot. They aren't trying to be evil by parking on the swale.

They are here to enjoy the festival, not to piss off the neighbors.

Since the swale is city and/or county property, the homeowner needs to bite the bullet for three days and deal with it.
