Alcohol will not be served past 3 am

Legislation is being passed that would ban all bars and clubs in the Grove from selling alcohol past 3 am.

Hopefully this will curb crime and noise that has been plaguing the Grove for quite awhile now. The Village Council will meet again and discuss the issue, but it seems like a done deal.

''5 a.m. clubs in Coconut Grove should be phased out as soon as possible,'' said Councilman David Collins.

If you think business is now bad for the shops in the Grove, then this new idea about phasing out nightclubs will kill Grove business.

The fact is that most people in Miami/the world are introduce to Coconut Grove through the nightclubs.

A better solution will be to bring in the right nightclubs into the Grove. Those that attrack young professionals.

After all, I am a young professional and I live in the Grove, a homeowner, not apartment, in South Grove. I fell in love with this area when I was introduce to it via nightclubs and bars.

If the nigh life can't compete with that in other parts of Miami, such as Brickel, Sunset Place, and South Beach then day business will suffer as traffic will slow.

Its like closing south beach nightlife and expecting that Lincoln Road Mall will continue to have business. That is not the way it works.

Unfortunetly this experiment will hurt the Grove, and our pretty shopping areas will shrink.

Also,
Empty store lots normally bring crime.

Totally agree with the comments from Bad Idea.

First Alcohol and Noise do not equal. Stopping Alcohol will not guarantee lower noise past 3am, unless a law to stop noise past 3am is also passed.

2nd, I would like to see the study that relates a majority of crime to only drinking past 3am. How has 3am been determined? Is that the time councilman David Collins goes to sleep? We have many crime issues, I do not see how changing the time would have saved the poor tourist who stoped for directions.

Finally I agree this will hurt business. Which are currently seeing high competition from many new and developing sites including brickell, mary brickell village and sunset. I agree the focus should be on making sure we have the right mix of clubs, bars and entertainment.

The world without late night Moe's or Flannigans is not a world that I'm interested in. We must rally the troops and protest!

Late night nightclubs (as opposed to restaurants like Moes and Flannigans) usually are just big empty spaces during the day and early evening. They contribute nothing to our Village except a big space for people to drink and dance late at night. I'd rather see places like Moe's which give us places to go out to eat lunch and dinner, to hang out at a sidewalk cafe, and also to stay out late if that's what I want to do. Purely late-night clubs belong in industrial zones where their noise can be at the highest decibels and the people partying there aren't bothering anyone else.

Is this geared only at NightCubs? Or does this impact local Grove friendly establishments, such as some mentioned above. If so this needs to be clearly studied before passing any laws. There is always pro's and con's to any change.

Downtown Coconut Grove is clearly a business district. We need less impediments to doing business in order to save the Grove from downward spiral happening in front of our eyes.

No alcohol past 3am now, and what next? Crazy laws and rules is what we need less of. We need a law that requires an old law be taken off the books once a new law is approved. How about we de-council Councilman David Collins. Is Miami becoming a communist totalitarian municipality? What happened to principles of freedom of trade and freedom to be left alone?

I'm also a young professional and enjoy both all the grove has to offer. Both day and night.

People who go to the Grove to get away from the hassle of south beach will start going to other places. This is a bad move. *Most* of the establishments open this late are low-key and a great place to catch up with friends.... And isn't that what we love about the grove?

I say shut down all the clubs and bars by 3:00 am. If the youth and "professionals" have not had enough drinking and socializing by 3:00 am then they have serious problems.

And the City should shut down those disgusting drug dens on NE 11th Street too. Who needs to stay up partying until 9:00 am? And what drugs do they take? Cut the hours back to 5:00 am...

"Bad idea" should learn how to spell; maybe if he quit worrying about drinking til 5am, he might be able to type an email.

Besides Flavour, where is there a "nightclub" in the Grove?

I cant say the 3am thing is dumb or not, because it works in other cities. However, its clearly a case of the old fuddy duddies complaining and getting their way even though its the youth that keeps the Grove alive on a monthly basis. You can tell that a lot of the comments here are also from the older crowd. The older crowd in the Grove doesnt shop or contribute much to Grove businesses either, then they complain when there are empty storefronts. You think the owners of all the $500K+ residences shop in the Grove? I doubt it. I dont even think there are more than 3 stores in the Grove that even cater to the older crowd.

Look at the Design District. That area has been resurrected by the youth movement. It started with appealing to the artsy crowd with eclectic bars and clubs and art houses, then added residential buildings and continued to grow. The Grove needs to follow suit.

I like the idea of appealing to the young professional crowd. I also think that you have to be respectful of the older crowd though, so having places shut down at 3am may be a way to do that. I strongly disagree with the notion that crime has anything to do with drinking at 3am though. Sure, you have the classic college dumbass vandal, but college kids arent the ones breaking into houses and cars. Maybe having more of a police presence could help reduce both cases?

THere has to be some give and take on both sides if the Grove is going to improve at all. Right now, its in a total state of disarray.

One example of a 5 a.m. nightclub (with no daytime presence) is Visions. Visions is the club whose 5 a.m. variance has been appealed by a resident, and ironically was the site of a stabbing shortly after that variance was granted. The location where Quench used to be has been host to similar venues.

I am on the side of leaving it open past 3AM. Am I one of those who hangs till that time? No. But I respect those that do. I also like the idea of taking a weekend away with friends and staying at say The Double Tree or Sonesta. Part of the appeal? Well I can go and socialize and maybe drink sometimes I have been known to socializing without getting drunk. I think or thought that I was being responsible by finding a place that I can stay and walk to and from. This way I avoid driving under the influence or risk driving while someone out there is under the influence. So with this passing it will not just hurt the clubs, it will hurt hotel business, moral of the young professionals who guess what have a lot of money to spend. I for one want them spending it here. So if this is a done deal as stated before it appears to me that there is something else pulling the strings here. What benefit does this councilman have to pass this? Is he looking for a kick back? Does his business need a contract? What harm has this done? Do not give me crime every one who has lived in the Grove knows the crime has been there for a very long time bring in better places that will attract the kind of people you want. Higher security like everyone else does and both the Grove and the residents will prosper.

3:00 am closing provides plenty of time. Plenty of time to do what they need to do. People need rest. There is no need for our youth to be out buying and using drugs except to allow a small group of club owners to benefit.

Enough..
Looks like you missed your medications. You just related 3am to Cocaine Cowboys. We are not in the late 70's. The Mutiny club was closed down over 20 years ago. Kids are not sniffing cocaine at Moes. There are no Columbian shipments being dropped off by plane over Senior frogs.

There maybe drug issues in other parts of the Grove but not direclty in the business district and definitely not to the level you suggest. "buying and using" and "club owners to benefit"... these comments are outside of the realm of replying to them but I am sure our Grove friendly business owners would be insulted.

I agree that clubs should close at 3:00 am.

Maybe if club goers went home and got some sleep they could return to the Grove in the mornings to shop in the Grove's stores?

I SERIOUSLY HAVE A PROBLEM STOPPING THE SALE OF DRINKS AT 3 AM. BUSINESS SUCH AS CLUBS AND BARS RELY HEAVILY ON THE SALE OF ALCOHOL. MILLIONS OF DOLLARS HAVE BEEN INVESTED INTO THESE VENUES SO THAT A FOLLOWING CAN BE CREATED. THE ECONOMIC GOAL OF THE GROVE IS TO GET PATRONS TO SPEND THEIR MONEY IN PLACES OTHER THAN THE BEACH WHICH CONTROLS MORE THAN 80% OF THE CLUB/BAR INCOME IN MIAMI. EVERYONE THAT COMPLAINS THAT CRIME IS HIGH AND THAT A HIGHER PRESENCE OF SECURITY IS NEEDED, SHOULD OPEN THEIR EYES AND USE THEIR BRAINS. THE CITY OF MIAMI CAN AFFORD TO PUT THE OFFICERS IT HAS NOW BECAUSE OF THE TAXES THAT CLUBS/BARS PAY FROM THEIR ALCOHOL SALES. IMAGINE WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE GROVE IF LESS POLICE OFFICERS ARE AROUND BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF CITY FUNDS WHEN TAX MONEY ISNT GENERATED! LEAVE THE 5 AM CUTOFF..YOU RATHER HAVE THAT THAN HAVING YOUR $500K HOMES ALMOST WORTHLESS BECAUSE OF HAVING HIGH CRIME.
