Just another Saturday in the Grove
While Fortunato (the dog) and I were out walking we spotted a duck poised for certain suicide on South Bayshore Drive. We tried to coax him back to the marina, where the family of ducks resides by one of the shrimp boats, but the duck misunderstood Fortunato's barking and hightailed it across Bayshore to the Coconut Grove Bank drive-through islands.
We called everyone we could think of, including our pet-friendly Commissioner Sarnoff, to come help. It's hard to find anyone on a Saturday morning, and my husband, who is a sucker for this type of adventure, is out of town.
Finally, the dashing Mr. David Collins, Executive Director of the Coconut Grove BIC, came to the rescue. While Dave coaxed the duck, Fortunato and I flagged down Officer Britt who did not hesitate to assist.
First, we tried to "arrest" the duck (i.e. force him into the back seat of the cruiser to drive him back to safety). Then, another squad car arrived and stopped traffic at the intersection of South Bayshore and 27th Ave., so that the duck could meander at leisure across to the relative safety of Seminole Boat ramp. At that point, Comm. Sarnoff called to ask how he could help, but by then the duck had reached safety through the collaboration of officers, constituents and pet.
Our thanks to David Collins, the officers, the Commissioner and all of those concerned.

I would've been just fine if all you people would've just gone about your business. I was very embarrassed that you actually called Commissioner Sarnof on a Saturday just for this; I'm not helpless you know.
- The Duck
Is this for real???? Let's hope that our police force is not called for the peacocks, birds, turtles, crabs, lizards, ants or any other animal that decides to cross one of our streets - we don't have enough of them.
Let's run the Duck for the City Commission!!!
What over zealous idiocy! How on earth do you think the duck managed to get this far – especially without the intentioned "help" from a bunch of bored quacks intent on harassing the status quo!
Just like chickens, ducks also know how to cross the road – albiet for no reason we humans can pretend to surmise.
FYI in a similar vein: The "animal guy" who lives on Inagua near Lucaya has been trying for the last two weeks to trap a beautiful wild macaw that hangs out in a nearby tree. He has posted two of his own sad captive macaws in cages in his front yard as bait to lure the curious wild one into captivity. Personally this kind of selfish behaviour sickens me. It would be devastating to lose another wild macaw from our skies. The birds of the air belong to us all.
It's inspiring to see all this civic brain-power plus the taxpayer paid police officers converge to devise a master plan to get a duck across the road. How did nature survive for 10 billion years before this band of idiots came along?
I am pleased to see people banding together to help animals. It gives me faith.
Yeah, you’re right. It’s nice to help others. But couldn’t she just help the duck, shut up and move on? Did she have to post a lengthy self-congratulatory homage to her great humanitarian efforts on a community web site? Does she want to be the Angelina Jolie of the Duck World?
i love animals, and id help the duck. But i sure as hell wouldnt bother the CITY COMMISSIONER. If your were truely concerned about their safety you should have called fish and wildlife.
Honestly people
Glad to see all the posts. This blog is truly active
and fun to read.
"But couldn’t she just help the duck, shut up and move on?"
- Did you just tell her to 'Shut the duck up'??
nyah binghi,
You're right about the "animal guy" on Inagua Ave. He is definitely as you described him.
He has a dozen or so monkeys in his back yard right now. The cages stink, and they attract flies and mosquitoes.
While it is nice to help out little animals, Im sure this duck wouldve been ok and I DEFINITELY think its absurd that the city commissioner was called on a weekend for something like this.
Anon - I think the person above was trying to say that she couldve helped the duck and then stopped blabbing to the whole town to help and moved on. I doubt the person was referring to shutting the duck up.
Look, I am all for helping animals, but this is just stupid. Calling the city commisioner? Why? What was he supposed to do? Is he a duck expert or something? I mean honestly, what was the expected outcome of that call? An initiative for 24/7 police duck patrol on Bayshore? An city funded Duck bridge? And lets take cops off patrol on Grand Avenue so that they can play crossing guard for a duck. Great idea. I'd rather the Police help the Base heads croos the streets than a friggin duck.
Look, if you can safely help the animal, without distracting drivers and possibly causing an accident, then great. But I don't want to end up rear ending somebody because you ran out into the street to save a duck.
I leave the Grove for two weeks and all hell breaks loose! I love it! Go Duck! It's great to hear that the Grove is animal friendly and as active as usual.
