Parking solutions

Yesterday, the Grove Business Improvement Committee (BIC) agreed to fund a valet service on Commodore Plaza starting mid-May.

The BIC agreed to an $8.00 valet service fee, which isn't bad compared to some of the self service parking lots and garages in the area.

They will fund up to $66,000 during a six month trial period.

"It easily could have gone over $10" had the committee not voted to dedicate funds from its Parking Waiver Trust, said David. Collins, committee chair.

A valet station will be set up at either end of Commodore Plaza between Main Highway and Grand Avenue and will shuttle cars to the Coconut Grove Playhouse lot. Metered parking will still be open and that's the good part, in Coral Gables and South Beach and other locations, the valets take away valuable meter parking and use it as theirs, here it will be available as usual for self-parking.

8 bucks to park ones car anywhere in florida is not good news. its what we call an old fashioned rip off. parking should be free everywhere and anywhere.

I'm a close neighbor to the Grove, just north of US1, and I'm wondering how much will people use that service. Ok, granted, during weekends it is a bit difficult to find street parking in the Grove, but the rest of the week I've never had a problem finding a spot on Grand Av or even Main Hwy... Is the valet service going to operate only during weekends? As a former resident of the Grove I've seen the area undergo so many changes, some for the good, some for the bad... Yet, $8.00 parking fee is rather steep during weekdays... Perhaps they can come up with a less expensive option during weekdays, since otherwise the service will likely be unused.. Just think about it... Most weekdays the city meters stop charging at 10 pm... Not the best way to invest in the area, in my opinion...

Think big, folks. Stop walking over dollars to pick up dimes. The Grove needs to compete with Gables and South Beach and those patrons can afford the service. If you cannot, sorry, but you can always take the bus.

It's true, the Grove people are always so cheap. Everything is about saving money all the time. Come on, this isn't a hippy community anymore.

The parking lot under the Sonesta is supposed to be provided at "metered rates" according to the agreement the City and the Sonesta developer made in order for the developer to build the Sonesta to such a height.

However, the Sonesta parking company has been breaking the agreement and charging $5, $6 and $7 at high-peak parking times. This is BS!

Parking should be free. Is the City enforcing their laws and agreements?

The Sonesta garage is scary - it is dark, too many places for people to hide, people can go in from either side, and it's expensive. And yes they should have metered rates as agreed to originally.
