Letters to the editor regarding the Mercy land
Commissioners Sanchez, Gonzalez and Spence-Jones:
I believe your votes to approve the zoning change at Mercy Hospital on behalf of the developer showed a distinct lack of courage to do the right thing and stand by your advisory boards, and the very recent GI Ordinance protecting the communities against rapacious developers.
Ms. Spence-Jones showed herself to be clueless, Mr. Gonzalez hid behind Staff, and Mr. Sanchez, who often gets the big picture, felt the courts were probably going to decide no matter which way he voted. You COMPLETELY IGNORED the fact that your two most important advisory boards, the PAB and the Zoning Board, voted to DENY!
You insulted them with this vote, indicating that their input has no value to you.
This zoning change was needed primarily by the developer, to succeed with another of his power plays, not by Mercy Hospital which had other courses of action. The hospital has MANY ways it can raise that money, as it has done in the past. Just check their website. As their brochure stated - they had a plan B, and were prepared to go another route. You three were not.
This vote was more than shameless, it was bad government, and showed a disturbing inconsistency in your own actions relating to zoning issues. You did not voice a single good reason for voting to approve, and went with the developer for expediency only, as if denying the Related Group was too hard a test.
At least you did remain consistent in your support of developers. The residents of Natoma Manors, Bay Heights, Vizcaya, The Roads and Coconut Grove can now look forward to gazing at another monstrously over-sized group of buildings hemming us in, buildings that could easily have been built elsewhere.
This vote looked like a capitulation to big money. It looked very much like you were afraid to disappoint the developer. Now he gets to make more millions at the expense of the surrounding neighborhoods, and all you have done is undermine the effectiveness of your advisory boards, as well as minimizing the value of your own ordinances! BRAVO.
The message to developers is: "Don't worry about a thing, we'll help you build whatever, wherever you want, no matter what the other Boards think, no matter what we ruled in the past." The saddest thing is, you had many good reasons to deny - not the least of which was following the lead of your own Advisory Boards.
Thank God there is a term limit for our Commissioners, because Miami desperately needs public servants with the courage to always serve its citizens, not special interests.

Dear Editor,
What a relief to see that our City Commissioners are finally taking concrete steps to address the severe shortage of luxury high rise condos in Miami by approving the rezoning of the land behind Mercy Hospital.
They did this by simultaneously reducing the terrible glut of land zoned for public health purposes -- because everybody knows that in the future, Miami's residents will be so wealthy they will never need procedure more invasive than a pedicure. This decision marks a welcome departure from past actions benefiting well-connected business interests and instead focuses on the long-term needs of current and future residents. My confidence in my City government is restored. I will now remove my tongue from my cheek.

Just a matter of style, but I have never found that using ALL CAPS to emphasize a point to be very persuasive.
You are correct, it is a matter of style. However,we are dealing with a dense group. I found them to be appropriate.
Mercy Hospital/Related Luxuy Condo Project Travisty
There is no need in the next couple of years for building even more condos in Miami and especially in Coconut Grove.
There is no justification to provide more warfront land to the rich.
There would be a lot fewer people supporting this project if they were not being financially benefited.
I doubt that Commissioner Michele Spence-Jones would have even considered voting for this project if the developer had not promised more money for affordable housing in her district.
Why won’t the two neighborhood associations disclose how much they are being paid for agreeing to this project?
Doesn’t the public have a right to know?
I would think it is illegal to get paid for a vote.
I heard a condo association was paid about $1.3 Million to help deal with the inconvenience of a Related Group project being built
in Bay Harbor.
Those of us that oppose the Mercy Hospital Related zoning change and project do so for the good of our community and with out any financial compensation.
How many times must John Lucas remind the Commissioners of our Miami City zoning codes?
How dare Commissioner Joe Sanchez tell John Lucas that he should have brought expert witness?
The zoning codes are the law of the land.
Would some one please find out what the so called Miami 21 plans are for the G1 zoned parcels!
What does Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk have to say about changing G1 to R4?
My guess is that good urban planning would not be in favor of the change.
I doubt that the original intent of the Deering estate in gifting this land to Mercy Hospital was probably not to build luxury condos.
How many people need to show up, sign petitions and publish Letters before the Commissioners abide by their wishes?
How dare the Assistant City Attorney say that the Commissioners do not need to agree with zoning laws?
How dare Winton show his face in public?
It’s not a matter of traffic.
It is not a matter saving Mercy Hospital from its years of mismanagement.
It is a mater of changing a zoning code that will have a detrimental effect on all other G1 zoned properties.
City decisions should not be totally made upon the amount of money that is exchanged.
Decisions should be made based on our quality of life and the future of our city.
This Mercy Hospital / Related Projects is one more frightening example of how three Miami City Commissioners and Mayor Manny Diaz continue to sell pieces of our community to the highest bidder just because they can’t manage their budget efficiently and effectively (as is the case with Mercy Hospital).
Incompetence should not be reward.

Coconut Grove
The Miami Herald published Wendy Stephans Letter to the Editor on January 31st, 2007. Good for Wendy. Good for the Grove. We are glad the Herald appreciated the letter and the humor. Then again, perhaps the Herald thought Wendy was being serious? First seen on coconutgrovegrapevine.com. Getting all the scoops... read the blogs first.
Perhaps everyone should got to swlip URL (click on swlip on the thread.)
I went and clicked to get the explanation to the blogs name and was taken to Audio Sparx (all about musicians) and never found the explanation. Hmmm...

The comment re SWLIP was meant for "Let's Annex the Grove" and I noticed a typo. Please move or discard. Thanks!
