No class act

I love this article in today's Herald:

It seems that Linda Haskins has given her staff $5,000 bonuses, even though they all have new jobs already and on top of that, she and her staff left Marc Sarnoff with nothing, just bare offices, not even citizen's files.

"We are left with no institutional memory of any complaint of any citizen of the city of Miami,'' Sarnoff said. ``When I got here, we couldn't even find a pencil or a legal pad.''

Class is as class does. Linda Haskins sure proves this. Merry Christmas, Linda.

Destruction of public records is a crime. Whoever is responsible for this "house cleaning" should be arrested. They can spend their bonus money on defense attorneys fees. However, knowing the City Attorney's office, they would eventually not only ask the State Attorney to drop the charges, they would agree to pay the defense attorney's fees as well.

This kind of stuff will continue as long as everyone continues to ignore the fact that this city does not treat our tax dollars as "our" money, that we have entrusted to them, it's "their" money, to spend as they wish.

Some time ago the Herald reported that 60% (or somewhere in that vicinity) of the city's sanitation employees were on full disability, all receiving full pay till they're about 60. Nobody said anything. no investigations, no protests, no questions, nothing.

You want to know why we have the highest taxes in Dade County, despite the fact that the tax base has exploded in the past 5 years ? Complacency. look no further my friend, as Pogo once said: "we have identified the enemy and it is us!"

Linda Haskin's behavior is disgusting. Every file and even the TV's were removed. Then she gave $5,000 to each of the perps. This was Manny's choice to represent Dist 2?

And these are the same perps who worked on Linda Haskin's campaign on City time. "Double dipping anyone?"

And to think several of the perps are still on the City of Miami payroll? Business as usual.

Business as usual.

Miami. What an embarrassing excuse for a city.

Linda Haskins is a low life. Giving away the taxpayers money like that... And she never did explain why she needed the 24/7 taxpayer paid SUV and driver. To campaign.

Basil Binns and Frank Balsbre took $5,000 each? Very low. And they are still on the city payroll? Maybe they can return the supplies and files they stole?

Does anyone who is reading this blog know anyone at the Miami Herald or the State's Attorney's office that they can ask to look into this criminal activity? When Hillary and Bill "cleaned out" the white house it raised a real stink, and they had to put it all back.

Why doesn't Sarnoff investigate this and have charges brought? Or is he already already toeing the (Diaz) line?

Knee-jerk reactions --expected knee-jerk reactions-- all around.

First: separate both actions.

Destruction of public records should be investigated, penalized, and whomever was ultimately responsible probably jailed.

But, the bonuses? Come on. Think about those people. They were probably working hard. Now, they will be fired by Sarnoff ONLY because they worked for Haskins (I would personally do the same thing and have done it before) as a result of a political (but not professional) move.

$5k is no big thing, it is probably a month of their salary but, in the scheme of things, no biggie.

On the private side, there are tons of cases like that. Many of us have "change of control" clauses in our contracts, for example. Most of us have gotten bonuses this Christmas.

We are all glad Haskins is out. Sarnoff has yet to prove he will be good. But the issue of the bonuses has been completely blown out of proportion.

However... no one ever mentions the more valuable records which were destroyed. No public stink about it. And you can bet... no investigation.

Now, that's worrisome.

Perhaps Linda Haskins or the perps who took $5,000 checks can explain what happened to all the files? To the TV's? Did Haskins give the TV's out as bonuses?

If the perps were working so hard then where are the fruits of their labor? Did they do any work? Or did they just work on Haskin's losing campaign on taxpayer time?

And why couldn't Haskins give them bonuses from the $730,000 she raised for her campaign? Why did she have to soak the taxpayers?

Is Haskins still on the City payroll? What a train wreck.
