A letter to the Herald

This was a letter to the Editor's of the Miami Herald:

Dear Herald Editors:

When the Herald endorsed Linda Haskins for Tuesday's run-off in today's paper, it described Mr. Sarnoff, who received more votes that Ms. Haskins on November 7, and who immediately had the support of all the other candidates that originally ran, as “a grass roots campaigner who believes developers and consultants have too much power at City Hall,” while “Ms. Haskins touts her experience, honesty, credentials, know-how and independence,” which are all, in fact, generic attributes that Mr. Sarnoff could also claim.

It was of little surprise that the Herald should take this position, for they are not actually endorsing Ms. Haskins, but Manny Diaz, who chose her as the interim commissioner. The $400,000+ campaign contributions to Ms. Haskin's campaign, few of which actually came from ordinary citizens in her district, were raised by Diaz supporters, big developers from here to New York, fancy law firms, construction companies, lobbyists, permit expediters and a lots of concrete lovers, many whose ads, and client's ads, pad the pages of The Herald.

While Linda Haskins supports Manny Diaz, I want my commissioner to support my interests as a citizen of this district, which Mr. Sarnoff as a leader in this community, as Chair of the Coconut Grove Village Council, Co-Chair of the TreeWatch Committee, and ordinary citizen who has spent countless hours trying to get a strong Tree Ordinance, and through whose efforts we will finally start to reforest our community, has done. He has my vote.

Liliana Dones
Coconut Grove

Editor's note: Let's not forget The Herald sold off very valuable land to a developer and the developer needs to build a mega-structure on the land in order to fulfill its need for greed and this is where Linda Haskins' vote is needed when zoning changes are needed. We already know Marc Sarnoff will not sell out on zoning issues.

Haskins has proved again and again that she is just Manny's lapdog in this race. She has not taken this job or race seriously.

Her blatant philandering with Home Depot, their lawyers, taking money from developers is insulting to the residents of District 2. She's already bleeding the taxpayers with this campaign, using our dollars for a chauffeur and acting like the guest of honor in a never ending party. What is going to happen if she's elected?

I really don't know what she's qualified to do, but from where I sit and from what I've seen she's not qualified for this one. If she's elected District 2 will be destroyed by greed, stupidity and arrogance.

I believe that this is the same obnoxious person who hectored us at a homeowners' association meeting about how we should report our neighbors who cut down trees without a permit, telling us that it was our responsibility to preserve all of the trees in the Grove so that she could enjoy them while on a walk.

Then admitted that she lives in a condo.

It is, as the French say, to laugh.

"Tax and Spend" Haskins. She still has not explained why she demands a taxpayer paid SUV and driver taking her and her staff to all her campaign events.

And then throwing Seth Gordon under a bus to the media as she takes contribtions from his clients... and campaigns with him arm in arm at Milams...

As people said about Winton..."Let's get rid of this clown"...

what, and people who live in condos should not enjoy trees? Guess you're probably dying for a nearby Home Depot...as the French say, how predictable.

You missed the point, entirely. Or perhaps you didn't miss the point, but would prefer to make a straw man argument.

This lady, who lives in a condo that no doubt has a much lower ratio of green space to built-out space, was hectoring us homeowners who, you know, actually have to live with trees falling against our houses after hurricanes, to maintain trees on our private property in a way that would allow her to enjoy them. She hectored us that, even if a tree is dangerously leaning against our roofs after a hurricane, we can't cut it down without a permit. And she hectored us about reporting neighbors who cut down such trees without a permit. Even junk trees. She hectored us that a tree becomes the city's business as soon as it starts to grow out of the ground which, as I pointed out, is something of a disincentive to grow trees.

The rank hypocrisy of this lady was stunning. I have to wonder how much time she spends tending to the garden around her condo. I wonder how many tree were cleared to make room for her condo. I wonder how many times she has been faced with a tree falling against her condo in a hurricane.

Let's make one thing clear: I love trees, too. As a property owner, I have an investment incentive to make my property as green as possible. In fact, I would like to replace some junk trees with oak trees, but the junk trees provide too much shade and it would be too much of a hassle to get permits and pay impact fees to have the junk trees removed. (Because hardwood trees like oaks take longer to grow, the city seems to have provided incentives for people to plant junk trees and disincentives to plant oaks.) My wife and I have designed plans for our house expansion to keep the house as close to its original "footprint" as possible.

But it is not my responsibility, as a property owner, to make life more enjoyable for some busybody condo-dweller. If she really, really loves trees so much that she's willing to subject all of us to policies that would be more recognizable in Soviet Russia than the U.S., she should sell her condo and buy property in northern Florida. The trees are much nicer and sturdier, there, and they don't have as many hurricanes.

The only way Miami can accept new residents without paving the Everglades is through urban infill and allowing height and density, in select locations. Not everyone can afford a house. Not everyone can handle the upkeep. Vertical housing permit us to house more people on a single lot without having to cut down trees on dozens or perhaps hundreds of lots to build hundreds of homes. So please be open minded. The goal is to have as much green and tree canopy as possible in our dense urban communities.

Of course, height and density should be placed downtown or along specific transit corridors and single family neighborhoods should be protected.
