Gables is a big part of Grove's traffic woes
Home Depot is not alone in exacerbating the traffic condition in the Grove. Our dear neighbor, The CIty Beautiful itself, Coral Gables, should also be cited. Gables over-zealous actions of positioning "traffic calming circles" on every other intersection has caused the Grove to become an unofficial artery for vehicular communters into downtown every morning between 7:15 am and 9 am. South Grove residents in particular cannot exit their driveways and the bumper-to-bumper traffic has now spilled over to Douglas Road and Grand Avenue up to Tigertail.
Like it or not Grovites, but we are in an undeclared war for control of our streets because the adjacent municipality Coral Gables is insulating its' roadways for their residents to the detriment of Coconut Grove.
Isn't it time for Grovites to petition the City of Miami to re-install and/or enforce the "NO right turn" signs on Le Jeune Road (begnning at Cartagena Circle) or must we wait for a tragedy to occur?

It certainly would be nice if the city of Miami did enforce the traffic regulations. However, there is absolutely no indication that they will ever do that. With a full 30 percent of the drivers in Miami uninsured, with anarchy on the roads, our understaffed police department does not have the resources necessary to protect our families who take risk death on a daily basis driving to the supermarket, school, etc. In the north, there is virtually a zero incidence of hit and run accidents. Here, it happens daily. Why? Because most of our lovely residents have bench warrants, carry no insurance, are illegal immigrants or simply wanted by the authorities for a variety of reasons. The solution? Hire more cops. Chicago has 11,000....New York 30,000. Both cities do not allow this type of behavior. I witness five or six traffic violations every day on my seven minute commute!
I agree with both posts here... You cant knock the Gables for the roundabouts. In fact, there are a few areas where I find them useful. I also gotta agree with the anon person who said that we need more cops enforcing rules here, especially cutting down on uninsured motorists and illegal immigrants. This has gotta be the easiest US city to illegally migrate to. Sad, just sad. We are slowly becoming South America.
I think that Coral Gables is just doing the only thing that can be done. Most of the morons who make this metropolis their home have no respect for what a sign or a traffic signal tells them. They are simply going to go through whatever channel of least resistance they can get away with. People use my little street to bypass traffic on Tigertail during peak hours and when events on Bayshore cause spillover traffic, and they think nothing of barrelling down a one and a half car-width street, with pedestrians, dogs, blind intersections, and small children, at 40 mph.
I live in So. Miami. the city has posted no rt. turn signs at every corner for 8 blocks straight. "Legally" I'd have to go an extra 7 blocks out of my way along a crowded busy street to circle around to turn onto my own street. So does everyone else who lives on those streets, just contributing to the backup even more. I'd be really pissed though if they closed the street off like in the gables.
This is a very interesting discussion. I see where the letter-writer is coming from, but as Gables resident, I've seen assholes whizzing down residential streets - streets where children play. I'm actually not a fan of the traffic circles, but I understand that they serve a purpose, and if I want safer streets, I have to accept them.
I'm not even sure that the traffic circles themselves are causing the problems in the Grove, as they may not be the root of all this...
I'll be posting about this tomorrow on the Gables blog, including some more info about traffic issues in the Gables and how they may/may not be impacting the Grove.
Where are the cops????? I go days without seeing anyone on patrol in the center of the Grove. Scary!
I was so optimistic when John Timoney took over as chief of police in Miami. What a farce. Nothing has changed. The reckless drivers rule the road, now more than ever!
I love traffic circles! Together with the new tires I got (Eagles Carbon fiber Performance Edge)they make for some really entertaining cornering. Keep them coming
The traffic circles are the alternative for closing off a neighborhood altogether (now prohibited in Miami-Dade); for unacceptable driving habits (driving fast, while on the cell phone and smoking--often at the same time); and for reducing traffic accidents (this has been proven in Coral Gables).
Face it. There is no real Gables v. Grove emnity except in the Grapevine's sick little mind. We all "own" the same streets; we all pay taxes pretty much the same way. Overcrowding is a fact today. What the government probably needs to do is layout an updated master plan for roads, streets and avenues and begin synchronizing traffic lights.
The Grapevine's "sick little mind" didn't bring up the subject or even think there was a problem.
