Comm. Linda Haskins upset with Home Depot

There is going to be a special commission meeting to discuss the Home Depot issue. Apparently they opened a can of worms when they started construction, angering many people, including Commissioner Linda Haskins, who represents the Grove.

''When I ... saw the construction work proceeding it made me sick to my stomach,'' she said.

Her predecessor, Johnny Winton, would probably have been there with a shovel in hand and a big smile on his face, helping out the Home Depot in the dark of night.

The City of Miami's code enforcement office, has issued warning letters, not citations, for the large spite signs, the construction trailer and the chain-link fence.

The Home Depot has until tomorrow, Oct. 2, to get a permit for the sign and until next Monday, Oct. 9, for the fence and the trailer.

Permitting issues will be cured. The thing I'm wondering is what anybody thinks is going to be done about HD building out their store in the old K-Mart location? Quite probably nothing.

The more I think about it, the more I think that the leaders of "Grove First" failed to inform people that they wouldn't be able to categorically halt HD from using the Grove Gate property without incurring liability under the Takings Clause, which would probably cost the City of Miami taxpayers millions, if not tens of millions, of dollars. Even big corporations have property rights under the Constitution.

hooray for you swlip! For years now i have been unable to understand the inability of Grove First proponents to understand that HD could open their store in the existing structure if they desired. it's amazing that the grove's now appointed/elected commissioner, Ms. Haskins, does not have a clear understanding of legal rights (yes, corporations have them, too). It would behoove her and her entire constituency if she were to educate herself first about all legal ramifications (takings clause) before she postulates!

Ahhh... Has anyone read the what the new legal addtions to C-1 in Coconut Grove are...

Yes, Home Depot has a legal write to apply for a permit, but that permit, even to retro fit, requires a Class II spec. permit. And, to my knowledge, Home Depot has not applied for such a permit for the retro-fit opition... Hello...

So, let make sure everyone on both sides are reading what has passed and what is legal fact.

What has been proposed and the actions taken by Home Depot are not "up to code" since there is not final Permit nor a Class II.

The sad part is, they will pay the fines for propaganda purposes... Where , you or I would not be able to affoard to pay such fines. Thanks to Corp.-USA-way-business, we get the short end again.

Hey, Class II requires all neighboors be informed, and I have not received a letter yet about the retro fit.

Legal rights fall on both sides of the issue. Yes we need a store at the K-mart site, but it would be nice to have one that would be willing to work with the area residents, instead of pushing everything through and over our heads.

I do not think mega-stores belong in the Grove. Home Depot should go further west, perhaps where the zoning permits the 120,000 sq ft organde boxes they adore.

It is a shame Linda Haskins supports Home Depot. 13,000 people signed petitions against it.

In her latest campaign filings it was disclosed Linda Haskins had accepted and cashed checks from at least one Home Depot attorney. Strange behavior?

It is now Nov 11th and it was just discovered that Linda Haskins is still using a Home Depot lobbyist, Seth Gordon, to raise money for her. Gordon is E-mailing potential donors. Haskins had told the Herald she told him not to help her. Will she favor the 13,000 people who signed petitions opposing Home Depot or will she favor Home Depot?

Haskins is not so disgusted that she does not gladly accept Home Depot lobbyist and attorney money.

Home Depot has been a bully. They would rather fight using lobbyists and attorneys than clean up its SW 8th St store. They show no concern for the neighborhoods.

We are still waiting for the "Special" Home Depot Commission meeting. I guess once Haskins Handlers told her voters opposed Home Depot she decided it was OK to take Home Depot's attorney's money but better put off that vote...until after the election.

Haskins has no shame...

Wasn't the "special" Home Depot meeting supposed to take place in October?

Guess "tax and spend" Haskins likes the taxpayer paid chauffeur too much.
