New Orleans fundraiser tonight
Tonight at Shake-A-Leg (2620 S. Bayshore Dr.), New Orleans photographer Elizabeth Bick is showing "Images of a Lost City," scenes from New Orleans before and after the recent devastation. The photos basically show the poorer areas of the Crescent City.
The fundraiser is only tonight from 6 to 10:30 pm. All proceeds will go to the rebuilding fund.

Casino Night Saturday
Tomorrow, October 1, 2005, the Grove Chamber is hosting a Casino Night at the Wyndham Grand Bay in the Grove. From 7:30 to 11:30 pm, you can play poker, roulette, blackjack and craps. Poker will be limited to 100 pre-paid people. Not sure why.
Proceeds from the event will go to Katrina victims and also the Chamber's website, it needs a make-over. We say, step up and give the website share to Rita victims.
For more info, the Chamber can be reached at: 305-444-7270 or you can email them at info@coconutgrove.com

Deli Lane
About a minute outside the Grove is Deli Lane Cafe, a great place for breakfast. Located at 14th Street and Brickell Ave., it is a perfect spot for a delicious, large, juicy meal.
You all may be familiar with the Deli Lane in South Miami, this second Deli Lane is the same; same menu, same service, same delicious food. The breakfasts are incredible.
Weekdays the place is very crowded with Brickell office workers, but on weekends it is very low-key and quiet. They play mellow '80s music out on the patio, which is nice this time of year on into the winter, with low humidity and breezes coming down the block from the bay.
If you prefer, you may eat inside, where there is plenty of room in an industrial, yet comfortable setting. It's a great place to start a weekend morning.

Dog park
The dog park at Virginia and Shipping had some tree damage due to Hurricane Katrina. Here the park workers are cleaning up the damage. The park is almost back to normal. Some of the tree coverage is gone, but that always grows back fast. Luckily Tropical Storm/Hurricane Rita did not do any further damage.

Rita is gone
As of this hour, Hurricane Rita is almost a memory.
The Grove had no problems. There was no major flooding, the bay did not even come over the seawalls.
There are people playing soccer in Kennedy Park, people walking dogs, jogging, walking, Burger King is open serving food. All is basically back to normal. There is barely a puddle in the streets. No trees seem to be down either.

Raf Kaz closing
Rita is almost a memory, now we can get back to things that matter:
Raf Kaz on Commodore Plaza and Grand Ave. is going out of business. Their big sale starts this Thursday, Sept. 22. I remember when this was a newsstand before Raf Kaz, wonder what is to be on the spot next.

Rita
So people are starting to panic over Tropical Storm/Hurricane Rita. All the stores are packed, the streets are mobbed. I have never seen that many people in Milam's in my life. The lines at the check out went all the way up the shopping aisles.
Gas stations have lines of cars snaked out into the streets, blocking traffic. The old K-mart parking lot is full. All those people going to Walgreens and Milam's. The City is moving at a fast pace trying to remove all the rest of the debris left by Katrina. Hopefully there won't be any Rita debris and it will just be a fast moving storm.

Jim DeFede party tonight
Not sure if it is still on due to Hurricane Rita, but there's a Jim DeFede Appreciation party planned at 6:30 pm tonight at Scotty's Landing. Jim is the Herald columnist fired over the Art Teele audio tape thing. If you're a Jim fan, pop up and show your support. According the Herald, there's free beer for the first 50 guests who tell the bartender "I love Jim DeFede."
It may turn into a Jim DeFede Hurricane party.

Some info on the Pharmacy painting
Regarding the Coconut Grove Pharmacy painting, we received this response: "Your reader is referring to the Florida Pharmacy that was located on the first floor of the Engle Building, now occupied by a series of shops. It was a favorite local hangout in the 60’s, servicing food and selling gifts. It was the place to have breakfast and many artists hung out there. Mr. Leonard King, a current Grove artist and of that era may know who the Gain Zaaz looking signature might be. The realtor Tony Scornavacca, whose father of the same name was also a Grove artist that bartered much of his work, might also know. Good luck."

Heart Walk a success
The Heart Walk this morning was a success. Thousands showed up. You can see the crowd here in Peacock Park mingling after the actual walk. It was a perfect, sunny, low humidity morning.

Grand Avenue ribbon cutting and party
The season is starting, the Grove is already hosting two things tomorrow.
Not only is the Heart Walk tomorrow, but so is the ribbon cutting for the Grand Avenue renovation which seemed to take forever.
Starting at noon, you can join the mayor, commissioners and others at Grand Avenue and Douglas Road for a ceremony followed by a parade and street party.

Non-stop street work
The street work goes on in the downtown Grove area, it seems like it will never end. Streets have been closed and detours put up. Many people feel it is a waste of money to put a median on Grand Avenue and make the lanes smaller. Traffic will be backed up with less space to navigate, but it can't be any worse than it's been for the past year or so with virtually no traffic allowed to use the area.

Coconut Grove Pharmacy?
We received the following email from a reader from out of state. Perhaps someone locally knows what she is talking about. If you know about this painting, you can email us and we'll email her. I don't think the pharmacy is still there, but could it have been the playhouse? I think that used to be a pharmacy years ago.
I am researching a painting that we received as a wedding gift from a friend of my father’s. Our friend has now left the country, only to tell us prior to his departure that the artist had become well known after our friend had acquired the painting in some sort of bartering arrangement (I’m guessing a bet!).
The painting is a water color of Coconut Grove Pharmacy. It appears to have been painted in the late 1960’s or early ‘70’s and a billboard above the pharmacy says, “WGBS 710 NEWS”. I can not read the signature but looks something like “Fain zazz” or “Gain zazz” or “Jain zazz”.
Is the pharmacy still there? Can anyone help me? This piece has great sentimental value and some information on the artist would be wonderful.

Grove clean up
Lots of trees were knocked down by Hurricane Katrina. The City has had crews out working non-stop to clear the debris. Here a crew is seen working on South Bayshore Court.
