One more thing about Art Teele

To all the media types out there: Just because you buy ink by the barrel, it does not give you the right to humiliate people.

Art Teele supporters put down media

Yesterday in front of Miami City Hall, in the Grove, protesters were blaming the media, notably The New Times for the demise of former Miami Commissioner Art Teele. The protestors feel that if The New Times was not publishing Art Teele's personal problems including his sex life stories, that he may have been able to cope with his legal problems, rather than deal with being humiliated daily by the media.

The protesters were pouring red paint on copies of the current issue of The New Times to symbolize the blood lost due to sleazy media articles about Teele, which had nothing to do with his mounting legal problems..

We have to agree. Why was Teele hounded non-stop? Everyone who reads this has skeletons in the closet and they don't need to be turned into media gossip to punish us if we do something wrong. We have courts for that, not wanna-be journalists. The funny part is that most of these sleazy journalists have more horror stories in their backgrounds than Art Teele ever did.

And Jim DeFede should get his job back. He was one of the only reasons people picked up "The Herald." It's a shame we are a one newspaper town, if this had happened in any other major city, the competition would have had DeFede on the payroll telling his side of the story the next day.

Art Teele kills himself

Ex Miami Commissioner Art Teele shot himself in the mouth in The Miami Herald building at about 6:06 pm today. He died at 7:50 pm at the Ryder Trauma Center.

Teele entered The Herald and asked to see a reporter, but he shot himself in the mouth. He told the police who showed up that he wanted them to tell his wife that he loved her. He felt that the media coverage of him was unfair.

The New Times was about to publish a nasty expose on Teele. It should be out tomorrow. It reads like a seedy novel involving prostitution, police surveilance, illegal deals and loans.

Teele had been facing federal charges of conspiring to defraud Miami-Dade County in airport contracts, too.

PJ's in The Park -- Today!

Today from 4 pm to sunset, PJ's in the Park will be at Kennedy Park. The white tents are going up as we speak. This kids festival was organized by the City of Miami. Everyone is encouraged to wear your pajamas. If you do, you'll receive a passport when you arrive and you'll have to get it stamped at each booth. Those who get all booths to stamp the passports will be entered in a drawing to win prizes.

There will be lots of fun and games, an old fashioned type festival.

Kennedy Park is the huge park on the bay at 2200 S. Bayshore Drive, you can't miss the big white tents along the bike path. Admission is free. The festival is mainly for kids 3 to 8, but all are welcome!

Gables bed races?

This woman Barbara Corcoran was on The View the other day as some sort of authority, only she has no clue. On national TV she told about the Bed Races in the City of Coral Gables. And said this is one of the fun attractions of the Gables.

I didn't realize the Gables allowed any fun in their city, let alone the Coconut Grove Bed Races. Just goes to show you can't even trust TV show's like The View to be giving accurate information. I am sure the Gables' powers-that-be shuddered at the thought of the Bed Race being in their city, as well. They don't take to bohemian events too well. Their noses are too high in the air to enjoy them.

Grove traffic woes

Grove traffic is turning into a nightmare. Here is McDonald Street at Bird Ave. The street is actually closed so that that new development can work. Closing the streets for private development is wrong.

At the same time, Grand Ave. is closed from Cocowalk past the post office, there is no way around it. You cannot exit on Commore Plaze and cannot drive down Grand Ave. Traffic was backed up yesterday on Main Highway. This nonsense must stop.

Accident waiting to happen

There is an accident waiting to happen at the new stop signs on Bird Ave. and Aviation.

One sign is almost completely blocked by a tree. The sign needs to be lowered or the tree needs to be trimmed. I have seen almost two collisions in the past two days.

Incident at the post office

There was an ugly scene yesterday in the post office parking lot.

A man tried to enter through the exit driveway and would not budge when a line of cars trying to exit blocked him. The lady in the car in front of me was pleading with him to back up and let us all out but he refused to back up and use the proper entrance, but cooler heads prevailed when I got out of the car and threatened him.

He moved and the rest of us were able to leave the lot without incident. I got a round of applause from the other drivers before we all drove off.

Summer in Coconut Grove

Things are slow in Coconut Grove in the summer. It turns into a sleepy little town.

I won't be posting daily to this blog simply because there isn't much to post. I'll try to get out and take some local pictures and post them every other day or so.

Hurricane Dennis

Hurricane Dennis' fringe visited the Grove and it wasn't pleasant. I shudder to think what is going to happen in the Panhandle as it approaches.

Luckily, there was no flooding, we had all that flooding a few weeks ago yet nothing from Dennis.

Some trees were down, nothing major, mostly in the Coral Gables area. Main Highway seemed to come through just fine, there were some areas near Ingram that needed tree removal and it appears that Old Cutler Road made it through ok. All the beautiful ficus trees seem to be ok.

The power was out in our area for almost 20 hours, it feels so good to have the a/c back on and all the comforts of home. You don't realize how much we rely on electricity, I can only imagine what it was like without electricity in the old days of the Barnacle and before. It must have been dark and spooky and mosquito-ridden in the Grove way back when.

The photo here is not in the grove, but will give you an idea of some of the minor damage done to trees.

Bad Office Depot, Good Office Max

That Office Depot on 27th Ave. and Coral Way is a total nightmare. The service is so slow and the workers there are so rude, especially this one uppity manager. I have waited in line for up to 45 minutes to purchase toner for a printer. I once waited over an hour to purchase a microwave and mini refrigerator for our condo office. I ended up leaving in frustration and going to Best Buy.

One ignorant worker had me purchase a bunch of expensive software for my computer, claiming with such authority that what I needed was in that software. Nothing I needed was part of the software and I was out hundreds of dollars due to this pure indifference and ignorance.

I have found that if you go to Office Max on Ponce de Leon Blvd. in Coral Gables, the service is excellent, it is never crowded and they don't have attitudes. I think the pricing is even better. It is well worth the trip.

Grove Bed Race

Coconut Grove Jaycees present the Parade of Beds and Races on July 4th down the streets of Coconut Grove. Stay for the races and then music, food and fireworks at Peacock Park.

Last year's event, drew 15,000 people The park was full for the fireworks display. Did you see the Hooters bed? How about the "racing" bed that actually had rims? They had guys dressed like farmers, girls dressed in pajamas, a sailboat bed and one that resembled a crib. Don't miss it this year.

The Coconut Grove Jaycees are a leadership organization committed to making an impact in our community and developing young people into leaders. For more information visit www.coconutgrovejaycees.com or call 305-221-9395.

Sprawl Busters

For those interested in keeping Home Depot out of the Grove, there is a website that goes into this subject called "Sprawl Busters."

According to their website: "No matter what the logo on the building says--Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Target, Lowe's, Kohls, CVS--if its unwanted development, Sprawl-Busters can help you stop it."
