Books & Books is opening in the Grove

Exciting news on the bookstore front. We almost didn't have one bookstore and luckily The Bookstore in the Grove has new owners, and now we'll have two.

Books & Books is coming to the Grove, to 3409 Main Highway to be exact, next to Panther Coffee in the former Vino's wine place.

Books & Books owner, Mitchell Kaplan tells me that they are working on opening before the holidays.

The space has two floors which is nice for a bookstore, it makes it more cozy for some reason.

"We’re so pleased to have such wonderful neighbors and we hope to work very much in tandem with them," says Mitchell.

Just like their new store in Pinecrest, this will start as a pop-up, but, as with that store, they have every expectation that they will be there for the long term.

"We will not have coffee, as there is the wonderful Panther Coffee right next to us and we hope we’ll see many customers browsing our store, while enjoying one of their marvelous coffees," said Mitchell.

You know what would be interesting? If they opened a window between the two spaces and maybe a door and they could serve coffee through the window opening and people can walk back and forth between the two spaces from inside.

Since Vino's the wine bar was there previously, Books & Books is looking into the possibility of adding a wine bar to their bookstore.

Mitchell says, "I’m hoping that we can successfully bring our brand of independent bookselling to this very iconic building in The Grove, a community that, as a Miami native, I’ve always revered."

Their flagship store is in Coral Gables and they also have locations on Lincoln Road in South Beach, Bal Harbour Shops, Grand Cayman, Miami International Airport, Adrienne Arsht Center, Key West, Suniland Shops (Pinecrest) and a gift shop at the Coral Gables Museum. And now, Coconut Grove!

I hope you are wrong. I think the Grove can handle two bookstores. I am sure they will both figure it out.

You can never too many books! I'd like to think there's room for many book/reading options; Library, small, large shops, used book stores, vintage, story time for children, book discussion groups, poetry and play readings, music, art.

If you look at the history of the Grove, we had several bookstores. They all went out of business due to the Big Box Border book store. When Borders had their "going out of business" sale, the checkout clerk remarked "now the Grove won't have a bookstore", and I thought "Yes, because of Borders". Now we are back where we started. Let's hope there's room for both.

The Coral Gables in Books & Books on Aragon was the best of all of them. A near perfect book lovers atmosphere. Heard so many fine writers speak there. Times change though.
