Bird Avenue groundbreaking is Monday

There is a ground breaking on Monday, July 10 for the Bird Avenue  street work project.

Commissioner Ken Russell will be part of the ceremony celebrating the long-time coming $2.1 million dollar project which includes newly designated bike lanes, concrete sidewalks with ramps, drainage improvements, road pavement, and markings.

Work will start on July 31 and will be done in two phases. Phase 1 will begin on Bird Avenue from US1 to McDonald Street. Phase 2 will continue on Bird Avenue to Mary Street and McDonald Street from US1 to Jackson Avenue.

"The redesign of Bird Avenue has begun. New landscaping will add to the canopy and aesthetic that is important to the Grove. New bike lanes will encourage us to get out of our cars and safely enjoy the neighborhood," said Commissioner Russell.

The groundbreaking ceremony is at 10 am a the corner of Bird and Bridgeport Avenues. Imagine if we had a ground breaking party for every Coconut Grove project being done these days. I think we would have an event daily!

Here is a map of the plan. Click on it for a larger version.

  1. All this change and advancement in Coconut Grove is exciting. It's going to be a busy couple years, but we will come out a better community on the other side. Now let's hope that those of us who live in this great village frequent these spots so that in 5 years we don't have to see another face-lift to the Grove!!!

  2. Agreed. I've dropped my car off at the car wash on Bird and US-1, and tried to take a kid in a stroller to Milam's and Home Depot to run some errands while I was waiting. Bird is currently very inhospitable to pedestrians and I'm excited about this change. This is great news to me!
