On Friday, February 24, there is a Regatta Moonlight Concert featuring Ken and Summer Gill.
This father/daughter duo, shown here, entertains with an eclectic mix of acoustic music spanning all decades and genres and characterized by harmonies, guitar, and piano instrumentals.
The gate opens at 6 pm for a performance from 7 to 9 pm. Lawn chairs and picnics are welcome. No pets, please. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for members of The Barnacle Society, and $3 for children ages 6-9. Children 5 and under are admitted free.
On Saturday, February 25, there is the Regatta and Chowder Party. The Washington’s Birthday Regatta was first organized in 1887 by Ralph Middleton Munroe—a yacht designer, Coconut Grove pioneer, and first Commodore of the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club. This year’s races are open to sailboats of traditional design. The entry fee is $50 with advance registration and $75 on the day of the race. Registration begins at 10 am and skippers must meet at 10:30 am at The Barnacle. Races start at noon on Biscayne Bay.
Following the Regatta, participants and guests are encouraged to come in period dress from the Era of the Bay (1821-1896) for the “Who in the Grove do you think you are?” Costume Contest during the traditional Chowder Party and Awards Ceremony. Festivities begin at 5:30 pm under The Barnacle’s Micco Pavilion and are free for registered sailors. Non-sailing guests may dine for $10 each. Additional Regatta T-shirts are $10 each.
Finally, on Sunday, February 26, there is The Mail Run. This fun sail and raft up begins at 11 am on Biscayne Bay. The Mail Run commemorates the Commodore’s frequent trips to Fowey Rock to pick up mail packets from passing schooners.
