Shofar in the Park

In what has become a yearly Coconut Grove tradition, for the third year in a row, Chabad of Coconut Grove, and the Skylar Mai Hebrew Montessori will hold their annual Shofar Blowing in Peacock Park, in honor of Rosh Hashanah which begins this year on Sunday, September 13, at sundown. The unique event will give those in the community who might not have had a chance to hear the shofar at a service during the day to catch one at the park in the evening. The event is free and Rabbi's will be available to blow the shofar on Monday, September 14 from 6:00 to 6:30 pm.

The Jewish New Year is celebrated by people traditionally attending synagogue, spending time with friends and family and enjoying festive holiday meals. One of the many traditions past down from Mount Sinai and practiced on Rosh Hashanah is the blowing of the Shofar. The sound of the Shofar's blast symbolizes many things. The most common is to signify a child's cry. Just as  a child cries out to its parent and the parent responds, the horn signifies the cry of humanity to God to heal the world of its suffering and pain and grant a sweet and happy new year to all.
