There's a small petition that asks that a bike lane be put in on Main Highway. Here's the petition.
It's a great idea, but I didn't realize that Main Highway needed a bike lane, the main area of Main Highway is only a few blocks long and once it reaches the start of the South Grove around Ransom Everglades, there is a bike path on the east side of the street which goes all the way south. I remember them putting the one along Old Cutler road in the 1970s, I used to watch the workers from the school bus on the way home from school! That connects all the way up to the Grove.
It should be an easy thing to add a bike lane, especially in light of the fact that Main Highway will soon be torn up for road work and they can add the bike lane at the end of that project.
Honolulu and other cities added bike lanes and it dramatically dropped the amount of people who rode on the sidewalk. We already have that bike symbol on the road (the sharrows), now all we need to do is make it a bike lane, but I guess it would have to be on the east side of the street so it meets up with the bike lane at Ransom.
The petition, started by the BID asks that the city place the lane from Franklin Avenue to McFarlane Road. I would think that a bike lane should extend from Main Highway at Ransom, north on Main, down through McFarlane and onto South Bayshore Drive. Come to think of it, I think a special new bike lane will be part of the renovation of South Bayshore Drive, when that happens.
There is a city commission meeting today (Thursday, May 14) and the commissioners have this issue on the agenda. I'm not sure why Commissioner Sarnoff cannot just snap his fingers and have this happen like he does with everything else, rather than petitioning it. But maybe he's the one being petitioned here. I don't know, but it's a good idea to sign it. Bike lanes are good for everyone; they are a great quality of life thing.
During the past year or so, after those signs were installed telling drivers "STOP FOR PEOPLE IN THE CROSSWALKS", folks on Grand Avenue would glare in your eyes, from the curb, daring someone to hit them, but that fad has faded with time. Then I noticed folks all about the Grove would double time 10/20/25 feet, some would run - - - to force drivers to make a choice, one person even pushed their kid out in front, double timing it, 10' away and began waving his fist at me, yelling, screaming, could have had a stroke or heart attack! Bicyclist, generally speaking, create an unruly mob/gang/tumult, who I have never seen obey traffic law. There are signs on our roadways that read "SHARE THE ROAD", which I do and everyone in my family ride bikes. They already have a bike path, it's called a roadway!?
ReplyDeleteA Solar Bike path would be better.

Main Highway is far too narrow for bike paths. They would have to widen the roads.
ReplyDeleteThis would be nice but I see no space and if they did I wonder if they would really use the bike line and line up one after the other, and stop at stop signs and red lights they have to follow the law. I have no issue But time and time again they take the red lights and look at car drives like it is their fault. I have to say there are those that to fallow the rules for their safety and other. The other day one actual hit my truck while I was stopped why they wanted to move in front of all the cars instead of waiting.
ReplyDeleteGet rid of the parking on both sides of the small stretch to accomodate the width needed for a bike path. People pulling in and out slow down the traffic anyway.
ReplyDeletebike path these guys already take over the street already. It will not make a difference. Now tell us what happened to Mr. Moes. Place was only good at serving booze. Look at Igram bld more than half vacant. Grove needs some help as these vacant places say go somewhere that has action.
ReplyDeleteHow about an alternate route? Traveling north, turn at Plaza Street across from the Moorings. Continue the route through the west Grove onto Oak, down to Mary, then connect back to the bike trail on Bayshore. I'm sure that a route close to this idea would go far in keeping the cars and bikes apart. As a resident near Plaza, I would be thrilled to close off that street to bike traffic only!
ReplyDeleteWhat do they need a path for? They use the whole lane!
ReplyDeleteA bike lane from Franklin Ave. where Calamri is to McFarland before you go down towards the bay!!! Why bother!!! Such a short stretch! So what will they do, take more parking spaces away to make this very small stretch for bikes? I am a bike rider but this is the most stupid thing I've heard of recently! Oh no maybe not, how about all the other crap that's going on in this village between the tearing down of quaint homes to putting up ugly box houses and the building of obnoxious high rise condos!! Don't get me started on the 27th ave project, the Bayshore Dr project and now the Main Hwy project. They call it progress, I call it greed!
