Another plan has been presented to the City Commission in regards to Miami Marine Stadium. The city will own the structure but the facility would be operated by a private company. The city also plans to build a park with event space, around the stadium and mooring fields for boats and a marina are part of the plan.
Of course this takes the historic facility and reinvents it, turning the Marine Stadium into a circus, what next, flea market Saturday or Green Market Sunday? Hmm, I sort of like that. Then what, a hotel and condos? They claim that making all the changes will make the whole area into a tourist destination. Of course the residents of Key Biscayne don't care much for the plan with all the extra traffic it will bring. They don't mind restoration of the actual stadium, they just don't want the circus that is planned to come with it. It's a nice peaceful place now. Why turn it more into a tourist destination? A water park was turned down as an idea for the Seaquarium across the causeway from the Marine Stadium and that is still surviving with it's current amount of tourists. It's not overrun and it survives.
It's a shame that the stadium cannot just be a stadium and support itself with events like it did originally. It sort of reminds me of the Playhouse plans, there are all sorts of ideas but nothing comes to light unless you can add a condo and stores and a parking garage and everything else. But I suppose if the events are few and far between, it would be like the two weeks during the tennis tournament, when people into the tournament go to the Key and those who are not into crowds and tennis avoid the Key. Unfortunately for residents, they don't have a choice.
Sarnoff votes to commercialize 25 acres around Marine Stadium and NOT one penny to restore the Stadium.
