Suspicious magazine sales people

Magazine sales people have now moved to the Center Grove after residents of both the North and South Grove called police over the past two weeks because of the sales peoples' apparently aggressive behaviors to enter residents' yards and homes.

Center Grove residents called police yesterday and the police responded quickly. Neighborhood Resource Officer Braga has recently been in touch with the owners of the magazine company to report these behaviors to resolve these persistent neighborhood problems.

If you see these magazine sales people, please call the non-emergency police number (305-579-6111) and let them know you are calling on behalf of the All-Grove Crime Watch and request a marked unit to come to the area to check out these people who appear to be "casing" homes.

What do you mean by "apparently aggressive behaviors to enter residents' yards and homes?"

Exactly what happened?

One of these guys came to my house to sell magazines for some kind of college tuition fund raising effort. I didn't buy a subscription, but he was very polite.

These kids are Africa American and to accuse this group of "casing the neighborhood" is quite a stretch, an insult and extremely racist.

Male African American teens go door to door to sell magazines in a white neighborhood and they are accused of "casing the neighborhood". This group has been selling magazines for years door to door in the Grove. They are hard working, harmless college bound students.

The Grapevine should do a little research before promoting racist hate mongering.

Investigate before jumping to conclusions Grapevine.

I just passed on the police and crime watch report. I didn't write the report. Contact the police at the number above if you feel this is the case and argue with Officer Braga. You tell him he is full of crap since this came from him.

One of my friends in the gables got scammed last week by someone trying to sell magazines. They looked up the "company" a few days later, and it was a complete fraud.

The person who came to the door said he was trying to pay for college.

The ones snooping around the south grove were actually white and maybe latin. They won't take no for an answer and they try to get into the house, I had to call my husband to get rid of them at the front door.

This information was provided by Commander Martin and Office Braga at the Crimewatch meeting. Not all of these companies are legit; some of them scope our your property, report to their driver who is home and who is not, whether or not your have a dog, etc. If you want to take the risk that is up to you - just don't complain later that there is too much crime in the Grove and the police are not doing their jobs.

Racial profiling is a crime.

Racial profiling is crime most often committed by the police.

Passing on the police and crime watch report does not mean that you've got the whole story. You shoud know that Mr. Grapevine.

If you are going to request that people "call the non-emergency police number and let them know you are calling on behalf of the All-Grove Crime Watch and request a marked unit to come to the area to check out "these people" who appear to be "casing" homes,".....Then you might want to be pretty sure that YOU are not participating in racial profiling.

9 out of 10, Yes that's NINE out of TEN of these calls are a result of racial profiling and THAT is the crime.

If you are going to have a blog - check your facts! Don't promote racial profiling. It's a crime.

Shut up Ben. The magazine sellers I saw were not African American so stop making an ass of yourself and put your email address if you want to be taken seriously.

If there is a trend in crime it is the duty of the police officers to report it at the crime watch meetings. The grapevine offers this information as a public service.

There was no mention of race until you brought it up. Get off your high horse and see this issue for what it is. Sales people with overly aggressive behavior.

If you don't like what you read on this site don't come too it.

The lesson is to be alert to people who come knocking on your door, or who enter your property, on vague pretenses. They might very well be casing your house.

Years ago, I noticed a couple of guys in the neighborhood who appeared to be walking a pair of dogs, but who were letting the dogs off their leashes to run into people's backyards while the guys watched from the street. I confronted them from my doorway, and let them know in no uncertain terms what I thought they were doing, and that if I caught their dogs on my property I would put a 9mm cap in them, no questions asked. When one of the dirtbags asked if I was going to shoot him, I said, "Not as long as you remain off my property."

I never saw them again.

Burglaries in our area went to practically nil for several months, at least.

Racial profiling actually is not a crime and is not illegal. Ethical is another question.

I actually think i saw this same group in the Gables yesterday and I believe they were of Latin background, not that it matters. I am sure people complained there as well and they will be asked to leave. Why? Because door to door stuff this day and age is sketchy. If i am going to order a magazine i will do it online. Heck even the girl scouts have stopped going door to door because often times the people answering are sketchy. Usually these type of things are scams and you really need to be careful. I mean think of all the people who have been robbed or assaulted by people posing as FPL workers. If I don't know you, I don't open my door, and if I have the slightest inclination your up to no good, I will call the cops. PERIOD
