He loved discovering the history of the area

I was talking to one of the artists at the art show this past weekend. I think he said he was from Denver, but he seemed to know a lot about the Grove. I asked him how he knew and he said that he liked history. He told me he ended up on Charles Avenue and he was reading the historic markers there. I told him that it was the oldest street in the Grove and he said he knew that and loved that.

He told me about finding the Biltmore in Coral Gables and some other place on the Miami River.

I asked him if he knew where he was - in Regatta Park, right next door to City Hall. He didn't. I told him the history of City Hall and how it was an original Pan Am terminal and I told him about all the hangars in the area and how historic the area was.

I hope we keep our history. Even if the developers and so many new Grovites don't care for it. There are many of us who do and obviously many people from out of town who appreciate it and seek it out.

Thanks to Grovite Joyce Nelson, we have these historical markers including The Fresh Market, City Hall, the Library, the Playhouse, Woman's Club, Charles Avenue and there are more to come.

Ellen: All I want to know, I just want to know one simple thing. When do I get to become an islander?
Councilwoman: Ellen, never! Never! You're not born here -- you're not an islander.

Moving to a place and then changing everything about that place that makes that place unique so that you can profit off the location and history and reputation does not make you a member of the community. They are not buying a club membership.
What we have now is Coconut Grove in name only. Everything that made it the Grove has been torn down or sold off. What we have is a tourist trap under constant construction as new investors try to reimagine "The Nearby Republic" in its most profitable form as if the content and character of The Village is something that can be manipulated and controlled by simply rebranding while continuing sell the reputation of 30-40yrs past.

Building 30 story hotels or high end hotels and condos in the center of the village and moving in huge corporate entities to pump money and people into the area is just attaching a ventilator to a body from which the soul has long since fled just to keep the body going. It will be interesting to watch over the next decade or so to see what kind of Frankenstein has been created.

I think we need a statue of Jim Morrison in Regatta Park -- that's part of our history also.
