On Friday, FIU's teachers and the American Society of Landscape Architect students participated in PARK(ing) Day, here in Coconut Grove. PARK(ing) Day is an annual event that encourages community members, students, and designers to transform metered parking spaces into temporary little parks.
This is a couple of parking spaces on Commodore Plaza.
So peaceful.
Two parking spaces on Commodore Plaza were turned into a park. They group spent the whole day out there, talking to passersby and telling them how urban centers around the world are a big part of wasted fuel and pollution.
Their idea is to promote a healthy, vibrant urban human habitat. It’s time to rethink the way streets are used and to re-imagine the possibilities of the urban landscape.
They showed how this plot of land (the parking spaces) can be turned into something beautiful and healthy for the environment.
Coincidentally, or maybe not, the day coincided with Global Climate Day, where millions of people around the world walked out of schools and work places to protest and demanded an end to the age of fossil fuel, trying to stem the tide of global warming. Huge marches took place in support of the "Fridays for Future" campaign.
It was one of the largest youth-led protests in history. "Oceans are rising and so are we!" read one sign. "Whose future? Our future!" read another. There is no Planet B.
