Jorge Luis Prats performs at Friday at St. Hugh

The St. Hugh Steinway Concert Series is Friday, September 27, featuring Jorge Luis Prats at the piano. 

Prats studied at the National School of Arts in Cuba and later he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory of Moscow. He continued his higher piano education in Paris in Vienna. At the age of 21, he won the first prize at the prestigious Concours Marguerite Long – Jacques Thibaud in Paris as well as the special award of best interpretation of works by Ravel and Jolivet.

Ever since Prats first recital at the Miami International Piano Festival in 2007, his career has undergone a dramatic ascent. His debut recital in 2010 at the at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam was received with standing ovations, prompting his return to the series ‘Meister Pianisten’ for the third time consecutively, an honor previously bestowed only to the renowned pianists Alfred Brendel and Grigory Sokolov.

In May 2010 Prats replaced Brazilian pianist Nelson Freire at the Salle Pleyel recital hall in Paris, to a tremendously enthusiastic response from the public. He has toured Europe, Latin America, China, Japan and Korea and has played with Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony. In Mexico, he has performed with the Mexico City Orchestra, the Ofunam Orchestra and the Jalapa Orchestra and in South America with the Columbia Philharmonic, Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra and Caracas Municipal Orchestra.

Prats is regularly invited to give masterclasses in respected institutions such as the National University of Columbia in Bogota, the National School of the Arts in Havana, the Arts Centre in Mexico, the Conservatory of Cordoba in Spain and Royal Conservatory in Toronto, he was also named Artistic Director of the National Orchestra of Cuba from 1985 to 2002. Jorge Luis Prats was the first pianist ever to record Alexander Scriabin’s 24 Preludes. His discography includes concerti by Beethoven, Grieg, Rachmaninov and Chopin as well as works by Cuban composers.
