Flexi-Pave may be the solution to saving the trees

The sidewalk outside Starbucks on Main Highway is being replaced with Flexi-Pave, a porous pavement made from recycled tires that allows water to get to tree roots while remaining malleable and flexible to tree growth. It is extremely porous and has been proven to clean the water as it passes through. Flexi-Pave can be used everywhere, even as a soft play surface or as a lower impact walking trail. It can also support heavy traffic and heavy vehicles if used in streets. It's slip resistant, too. It's flexible and does not crack.

For years the subject of what will be done with the trees when the sidewalks are redone was an issue. This small area will test this new material. The large trees will be saved and worked around. The bricks are not there ,but it was either bricks or trees.

Arborists painstakingly looked at roots that were able to be trimmed so as not to hurt the trees and the project is underway.

How about new trees? People die, why not trees? Just replaced them!

Are you serious? How do you replace an Old Growth Tree. And to think of killing one?
I think your comment needs to be rethought!

I am serious. How do you replace and old person? With a young one. You must face reality. The old trees are very nice, but it is obvious that, in that place they need to be renewed. It is sad but is the law of life.

Alfredo, my Brother from another Mother. Your comments are straight on, as you say "reality". Those big oaks, or trees can kill, maim or cause destruction when in contact with serious wind, as in hurricanes. Not to mention rot, weak connections between trunk and branches, break off and kill, as in coconuts that kill about 200 U.S. citizens annually. And if you cut them back, then they're not really, well, big mature naturally, bunkum, masculine trees and therefore unnaturally looking. And lets not talk about what their roots do to sidewalks & streets. Better yet plant a low growth, less roots tree.

Mr. or Ms. Anonymous @ 4:28 pm, you wrote, "coconuts that kill about 200 US citizens annually". I don't believe that is true.
Can you please post a link to any evidence to support that absurd claim?
