Scooters are back starting Thursday for pilot program

On Thursday, April 4, the City of Miami will officially launch a six-month pilot program for motorized rental scooters in District 2. 11 am is go time.

District 2 includes Coconut Grove, Brickell, Downtown Miami, Edgewater and Morningside. Scooters will not be allowed in other parts of the city during the pilot.

Six companies have applied to participate in the pilot program – Bird, Bolt, Jump, Lime, Lyft and Spin. Each company will start with up to 50 scooters each, which can increase or decrease according to rider demand and responsible operation.

The program will also generate funds for new bike lanes and street improvements in District 2, a priority of Miami City Commission Chairman Ken Russell, who represents the district.

"I'm in favor of many approaches to solving our traffic issues, particularly those that help fill the 'last-mile' gaps between neighborhoods and public transit," said Chairman Ken Russell. "This pilot program will allow us to safely test the scooters from both a mobility and a safety perspective. And we’re investing the proceeds back into our bike lanes, which is very exciting.”

How soon will the city be sued by someone who breaks their neck on the horrible sidewalks in Center Grove?

James, never. Scooters aren't allowed on sidewalks. I own my own scooter, and I ride it from the Brightline station to 24th and Biscayne about once a week or so. There only a couple of blocks where I'm on any road with real traffic.

Compare London to Miami Dade County, they have 270 tube stations and we have about 40, they are all live within less than a mile of a tube station, we have to go across town to hop on Metro Rail. They have double deckers passing each atop sometimes every five minutes, we can easily wait an hour for a bus to arrive. By the way Medellin, Colombia, technically a third work city is more connected by rail than Miami. Our Mayor thinks rapid transport is backward. Viva car dealerships, Viva toll plazas, Viva traffic and pollution.
